In IE if I type an address in the address bar and hit return or go then nothing happens

If i try and go to a webpage via a hyperlink then all is fine and the really odd thing is that if I type part of the address in the address bar and then select the full address form the history drop down it works , any ideas ?

should be able to add/ remove windows components in control panel, select IE and the click re-install, it'll then ask for a windows XP CD.

That SHOULD work. It's been a while since i've done it and i can't actually do it right this minute to see.

Try uninstalling the last 4 or 5 windows updates.

Had a customer call me up with the same problem today, got him to uninstall the last batch of critical updates & the problem was resolved.

Was too busy to look into it any further as I'm sure it's only one particular update that will need to be removed to solve this issue.

you are a star :D uninstalled a bunch of hotfixes dated 16/4/06 rebooted and problem is fixed

just one concern , will windows try and reinstall these hotfixes in the future ?

Only if you let it. :p

R-click My Computer > Automatic Updates > make sure either Notify me, but don't... or Turn off Automatic Updates are selected.

I would be tempted to install each hotfix one by one, until the problem surfaces again. Then you'll know which blighter is causing it, and let the rest of the world know. :D

cheers , selected not to install these updates and changed the settings to"notify" , flippin microsoft monkeys  :p

This happened to me about 6 months ago in my local Library. Wouldn't let me go to Hotmail via the address bar, I had to go to google, search for hotmail, then click it and it took me there. I assume thats them trying to block certain sites though?
