Black and White with selected colour : what editing software?

Hi,

I've seen some stunning pics on here and one that really stuck out was a black and white pic, but with a selected object in normal colour. Do I need photoshop for doing this myself, or would I be able to do this in photoshop elements (can't really afford the full photoshop after getting lightroom!

elements should be ok, just open the image and then create a new duplicate layer. hide the bottom layer and change the top layer to B&W then un-hide the bottom and use the erasing tool on the top layer to rub out the B&W revealing the colour below.

It can also be done by using the mask tool (if it exists in elements...)

Really? What's this effect called that I'm trying to achieve - I can google up how to do it in LR then?

Would be ace if I can avoid shelling out for any more software.

It's called selective colouring.

In Lightroom use the adjustment brush, turn the saturation right down and paint in the b&w leaving the area you want to highlight in colour.

Nice one. Thanks. I also figured out how to do in in Aperture 3 which is also pretty easy.
