Black screen during gaming - 2080 Ti

Are you running with g-sync on? I had the same issue when g-sync is set to windowed and fullscreen, solved it by only enabling it for fullscreen - At a guess I think there is some issue with newer windows updates, DWM and g-sync being enabled with DWM in use.

I am using gsync, cannot remember if it is in windowed and fullscreen mode or not, will check tonight.

Although key things I have noticed so far, which leads me to think it is either a thermal problem or hardware issue:
  • The crash is more likely when ambient temps are high
  • When running CS:GO at 300fps (higher load) I invariably get the crash, when I limit to 200fps it does not ever crash
  • The crash happens after about 30 minutes of Heaven but underclocking the gpu core it runs forever
My next steps will be disassembling the GPU waterblock and checking all thermal pad contacts are fine. If that doesn't fix it (and the gsync bug wasn't the issue!) it will have to be RMAed :(

Final update: took my PC apart last night and reseated the GPU water block... problem solved. Hour of heaven with no problems. So user error installing the water block first time round!

Temps all round are better, and back up to running the full overclock with no drama.

(sorry asus)

Same problem over here... with a EVGA RTX 2080

Also with a waterblock, but low temps. Never above 50c atleast.
Bought it last year in october and had no problems until december.

Tried to roleback drivers, play with refreshrate + G-sync settings. Nothing seem to work.
Then i tried a system restore in Windows 10. Just to be sure it wasnt a software issue.

Guess what... it worked! No random black screen for another 2 months.
Then it started again!... so again... system restore.

It worked again! for a month or so. Now i was pretty sure it was a software related issue. So i updated windows to 1903 instead of 1806.
And again. It got it fixed. For a few months, but now im back to random black screens again.

wtf is going on here?! That for some reason the black-screen issue gets solved by system restore + mayor Windows updates seems understandable. But why is the problem comming back after a few months is beyond me.

I noticed some things because i always keep track of my GPU's behaviour on my Logitech G15.

1. I can predict when it happens. I play a lot of ''Rising Storm 2'' and if my GPU load is not above 90%, its very likely to crash... i also notice a significant drop in frame rates.
2. Windows doesnt seem to crash. Audio continue's most of the time.
3. Memory stays stable, Temp drops & load drops to zero... (Like theres no connection with the graphics-card anymore)

any thoughts?!

Hi friend.

I got same issu like yours.
mine is 2080ti waterloop evga ftw3 ultara.
cpu is 9900k.

when i got black screen, its gpu temperature about 70'.
I am using PHANTEKS Vertival GPU Riser cable.
I doubt this cable...Do you using some riser cable?

Hi there,

I am hoping someone has experienced and fixed this, or can give me some pointers on how to troubleshoot this issue further.

Specs: 8700K, Asus Strix RTX 2080 Ti, 16gb g.skill 3200 CL14 RAM, maximus x hero, EVGA SuperNova G3 850W.

tldr:
  • Screen is turning black and receiving no signal after gaming/benchmarking for a while. System is not shutting off, can still hear discord voice chat.
  • Power cycling the PC brings it back to life (as long as I let it sit turned off for 10 seconds or so).
  • Have DDU cleaned and reinstalled nvidia drivers and nuked all my Asus software.
  • Card is on a custom loop, die temps seem fine (60C when stress testing), although a bit warmer now ambient temps have increased.
Story:

Randomly whilst gaming or running heaven benchmark my screen is going black, monitor not receiving a signal. This typically happens after the card has had time to warm up a bit. I can still hear discord chat in the background, but game sounds stop. This happens at stock and overclocked clocks. I then have to hard power cycle the PC.

If I turn the PC back on straight away the screen remains black (don't even see the post screen), but the motherboard goes through all the usual post codes on the LCD display. If I wait a few seconds and then power back on, the PC will boot into Windows fine.

Event viewer has been showing a crash related to AsusGPUFanHelper around the time of the black screen. However I have now uninstalled all the ASUS software and still get the problem. There are also warning level entries about windows detecting a problem with hardware.

I have DDUed my nvidia drivers in safe mode, and reinstalled the latest nvidia driver. But still get the black screen.

At this point I'm not sure what else to try. My card is water cooled on a custom loop - the die is hitting 60C under heaven benchmark load, 50C under normal gaming. Water temp 38-40C when saturated.

The possibilities I can think of are:
  • Memory chips overheating - this seems the most feasible, but I'm not sure how I would check? Would the chips overheating cause the card to shut off like this?
  • Standard RTX hardware issues - I am not getting any artefacts, game freezes, or anything else that would suggest a GPU failure. A possibility though...
  • Nvidia driver bug - but this seems unlikely.
  • Insufficient power available - I have a 2 year old 850W EVGA G3 PSU, supplying power to the card via two separate cables. Draw at the wall for the PC is about 500W. So I don't think this is the issue.
Any suggestions or tips are welcome. Thank you.

What a coincidence, I just came back to this thread to report my issue is still occurring! I have reinstalled windows and replaced my PSU, which hasn't fixed the issue.

I am also using the Phanteks riser cable to vertically mount my GPU, as it will not fit in my build horizontally. This makes it difficult to test without using the riser!

At this point it is the last thing to check before I give up. Asus won't even RMA cards that have been water cooled.

Hi Guys, so did you guys also tried the system-restore? Did it go away after that like it was the case on my PC?

Im pretty much 99% convinced now that it was a ''malicious site'' that i visited every now and then, that made the problem occur.
Some nasty Malware or something like that, makes it think that theres something wrong with your hardware.

I've completely reinstalled windows onto a new m.2 drive with a new windows USB stick, my issue is certainly not malware.

Edit: doesn't rule it out for others though.

Hey!!

I got this, Windows app error logs,,, that means dwm.exe error occurs!!
so, We are using multi monitors right??

and I cut second monitor now, and run FFXV bench and PUBG and more,,,, finally FIXED!!!!
i think my cheap DP cable make us these blackout error.

may the force be with you...

Hmm, I assumed a display port cable couldn't cause errors within Windows. Black screens, sure, but due to the signal not making it to the monitor, not driver crashes.

Unless it is some gsync bug causing the nvidia driver to crash with a dodgy displayport cable.

that sounds like my arous 2080ti :( sounds like a rma mate...

Hi all,

I had the same problem as you and solved it. My 24 pin connector on the motherboard wasn't properly inserted. Pushing it back in solved the problem. It probably was yanked when I was cable managing.

I wish you all the best in solving your problem and may your clock run fast and you temps stay cool.

Some more googling has shown other possible fixes/issues:
  • Corsair iCue / Link software, especially when used alongside HWInfo64 has been shown to cause black screens. I use both iCue and HWInfo.
  • Disabling Intel VT-D can fix the issue.
  • Installing nvidia driver 419.67 can fix the issue.
I’ve just uninstalled the latest nvidia drivers due to the black screen (never had any issues with the previous driver don’t have icue on(only when my Corsair keyboard acts it . Don’t use hwinfo.

Same issue past few days. 980ti. Having a nightmare trying to resolve this.

Replaced PSU, formatted and fresh OS. Tried a number of different nvidia drivers. Tried a few different bios versions. Removed all excess hardware. Reseated everything. Ran chkdsk, memtest, sfc. No issues. Disabled anti-virus. Changed power and dvi / hdmi cables. By any metric under the sun the computer is running within acceptable ranges.

I'm a broken man.

Black screens are a hardware issue in my experience had it on a GTX 1080 the VRM chips were overheating I'd RMA it. Game crashing and/or "driver stopped working" errors on the other hand are driver related.

I'm still getting this issue. My only unsolvable issue in over a decade of PC building.

At this point, I'm 99% certain it is temperature related:
  • When ambient temps go up, the issue is much more likely to occur
  • If I cap my FPS at 100 instead of 120 the issue goes away
But the confusing thing is - the card is on a full custom loop! Core temps hit 50C (ambient 28C (this new build flat is too efficient!), water temp 38-40C) and VRM is 58-60C. The STRIX 2080 Ti doesn't have memory temp sensors, but I am certain the block is installed correctly.

However, the issue seems to fairly reliably occur shortly after the VRM hitting 60C in HWInfo logs. 60C seems fairly normal for a VRM? I certainly wouldn't expect the card to hard shut off at that temperature.
