Black screen with cursor

Hi all, I've read loads but can't find the problem. I can get to my password screen, it displays no network connection but let's me sign In. I then get a black screen and cursor. It is windows 8.1. I can't boot into safe mode using f8 or restart and shift from the password screen. I have the 8.1 discs but do nothing when inserted. My son kindly managed to install mpc cleaner which I had been struggling to remove before crashing. Any ideas would be welcome. Many thanks as always.

To try and get in safe mode you could pull the power from your pc or just hold the power button until it shuts off. This should force it to notice a improper shutdown and ask if you want safe mode etc.

Also win8 sucks in my experience. Used it for 1 month then never used again.

Need more info OP, was this a working system?
Anything recently change with it?
Spec?
What happens when you try to get to safe mode? Is it crashing or hanging?
What are you doing when you put the discs in? Have you set the boot priority to the optical drive?

Slave the drive, get any needed files off of it then wipe/reinstall. Or just wipe/reinstall.

It'll be simpler in the end - I've now had similar issues multiple times with my three children and it's usually not worth the effort removing dodgy software (unless it's very easy to remove)

my experience is to just leave it till it clears, even if it take an hour.
turned out in one case just to be doing an update.
i just left it on and it eventually cleared by itself.
