I just bought a new AMD 955 cpu and I alson switched my board to a gigabyte, I took out my old components then put the new ones in.

After that I done a full re-install of windows, it restarted no problem then I put the drivers on for my board, gfx card, etc. I restart it again then it went to the welcome screen and after that it went black and the mouse cursor was showing but nothing else.

Does anyone know what this might be ? Thanks.

Sounds like a bad driver install, please list your components incl. gfx card PSU etc. The only driver I usually install from a disk supplied by the manufacturer is the ethernet but purely to get online.

HIS 6950 GFX card

Just an FYI. When installing to a SSD it's wise to leave the storage HDD disconnected. Also make sure ACHI mode (not IDE) is enabled in the sata settings of the BIOS.

If you didn't install the OS this way it might be wise to do another reinstall, which should also cure the black screen issue. Yes it does sound like a driver issue, especially as safe mode works ok. Safe mode loads the bare minimum required to get the OS loaded.

Yes I can start the machine in safe mode, do you think I should do a system restore then re-install the drivers? I don't have any of the disk I got the drivers online .

Yes andy I would do this then install the drivers one by one checking so you know if you get a conflict.

start with the mobo chipset driver first as always.

Yes I disconnected the HDD and made sure the ACHI was enabled. Hopefully doing a system restore on safe mode then re-installing the drivers will fix the problem.

That's ok then :) Yes I hope it will resolve the issue.

If you can't find your storage drive, head into computer management (then storage>Disk Management). Another top tip is to increase the multiplier in the BIOS. If you simply up it by one your 955BE will magically become a 965BE. Depending on your cooler you could go further than that, there is quite a lot to consider with overclocking the Phenom CPUs but just adjusting the multiplier is a fool proof solution.

Thanks for the advice honosuseri :) I'm glad I have this forum for help lol. I will be overclocking my cpu once everything is up and running ok, later on I am considering a water cooler to be on the safe side :).

" later on I am considering a water cooler to be on the safe side ."

Quite a few people think water cooling can be dangerous since electricity is around, I like how you think the exact opposite ;) :p

It is dangerous and safe at the same time:p if you know what you are doing I think you'll be fine.

I'll be looking into water cooled systems quite a bit before even thinking about buying anything for it:) or I migh just buy a pre built water cooler. But wheres the fun in that;).

You're welcome. I may well be teaching you to suck eggs but I thought it worth a mention for other readers of the thread too.

I don't want to sway you away from Water cooling but to do it properly it will cost easily twice as much as a very decent air cooler. The H100 would be the best CLC if your case can take it, otherwise look at the Antec 920. I've seen the corsair CLCs modded with clear tubing and having an extra rad added to the loop........this obviously voids the warranty lol

I was looking into the h100 or thw h80 they both look good, I know custom water cooling is expensive, it is just something to do really. I was looking at ocuk tech lab kits, not too sure what to get.
