Black Shark CD Version

I hope you're happy, you pushed me over the edge

Well hopefully my dusty old Saitek Cyborg will be up to the task

I'm not sure if my old Saitek Cyborg Gold is up to the job

If its one of those twisty sticks your good to go. A set of Saitek Pedals would be better of course.

I've just spent about two times what Blackshark cost me, in the pub tonight. Guess which was the better investment......

Nate

Edit:- don't drink and fly

Yea, that doesn't look normal.

It's one of the old ones with the twist control for rudder, so hopefully I should be able to managed some semblance of control. Looking at a couple of vids on youtube just taking off seems to be a challenge

Yeah you'll be fine, once you learn to how trim the aircraft it'll nearly fly itself. As for the start up, if you press WIN+HOME it will flip all the switches and push all the proper buttons for startup, very handy when you are just starting out. You can also start in the air depending on the mission.

I recommend having a look around the DCS forums some very handy info there to get you going in the right direction.

Nate, have you played this online at all yet?

I'm quite curious as to how people are finding that side of it now. People generally quite patient, helpful, good voice comms etc?

Thanks.

I've found that in general people are at different stages of the learning curve online. In the public servers I've found that beyond maybe 2 or 3 people in a group, there is little co-ordination to achieve the mission objective. I put this down to most flyer's still getting to grips with just staying in the air and the fact that you can jump in mid mission.

This is less of a problem than with LOMAC, in that now with triggers in the missions, the battles can be perpetual and have moving frontlines (almost)

Most of the more experienced flyer's are very helpful and patient if you ask specific questions.

If you want a more realistic co-ordinated mission experience I would suggest joining a squad or flying with friends in a passworded server. Voice comms is not some thing I use myself, but I've seen plenty of Teamspeak servers IPs in mission briefings online.

The online code is due a revamp with the first patch. At the moment the online interface is a bit bare. You have a server browser, but no place to chat before the mission (like Hyperlobby) you have join to chat. What the changes actually are is anyones guess, but it was mentioned that the decision to revamp a large part of the online code delayed the patch.

Grrrr

Spent hours downloading the setup.exe but it fails mid-install

As nate said above you need both the setup.exe and data.cab in the same folder (doesn't matter where you put them as long as they are together) to install.

Online play is pretty good, not the best sim for multiplayer work but that's down to the lack of mission planning interface. I've done a fair few missions with around 8 pilots and it was very smooth despite pilots being from UK, US and even Japan. So the netcode is pretty solid. If you're looking to learn the sim, having someone else help you through it online with comms is certainly the way to do it.

Unfortunatly I've pretty much stopped playing it now, apart from a bit of a fly about a couple of times a week. The lack of a dynamic campaign and mission briefing/planning interface has limited the sim far too much for me. Besides Falcon is still taking up most of my time.

I got an error message when trying to run the exe, but it seems to have loaded just now.

Does anything need editing to work in Win7?

The Sim must be launched from the shortcuts otherwise it won't load correctly. As for win 7 I'm not sure that it is supported yet fully, but others have gotten it to work.

Use this utility for a fps increase in vista and win7 DCSMax You can also quick load a mission, bypassing the GUI, with it, a handy tool.

picked up black shark but getting poor performance

how do you disable everything being labelled in triangles ? I think its something to do with the targetting system ? but it puts triangles around everything, missiles, aircraft, ground vehicles etc -and making my frame rates plummet :(

any ideas please ? its not labels/on/off - this is something different

Thats the arcade game mode doing that. Go to the options and do as this Page describes. Also be sure that the "Use these options for any mission" is selected also.

Bear in mind that while Black shark does run better than Lock On while managing to look better, it can still be a resource hog when things get busy in the missions. Black shark is primarily CPU dependant. If you have vista download the DCSMax utility in the post above yours, that'll give a nice boost to your framerate.

Also since you just picked up the sim I recommend you go through the offical FAQ. Lots of tips in there.

thanks Nate - I'll see if I can disable the "arcade mode" then ..

BUT in meantime I've used the DCSmax utility to set afinity instead of doing it manually in task manager

and my frame rates went up from 15 odd to 55 odd !! dramatic difference :)

great game
