Black Tie

Is this a uni organised thing tres? If so, make sure you're not the only guy literally going for the proper black tie attire out of your friendship group.

It's so irritating when people don't make the effort to follow the dress code.

Completely agree with you. I've been out before and been that guy, the only one who makes the effort out of the group to dress in accordance with the code.

Unlike at work in the city where you find the odd ones out are the ones not in black tie dress (or whatever the code happens to be).

If you're set on buying a cheap suit just for now go to M&S

^^^ do this

used to be able to pick up a DJ fairly cheaply there - if its for a student event then you'll probably not want a rented one rather you want one you're not potentially going to be billed further for, can wake up in a random place in, not worry much about damage/tears etc.. and can get covered in alcohol and/or bodily fluids....

Don't go anywhere near a white suit.

Get a good, black suit. If you're looking to 'pimp it' a bit, get a waistcoat and a bow tie.

If there's a Moss Bro near you it might be a solid choice. That said, I always buy my suits in the sale, so 50% off a suit significantly cuts down the cost :)

Apparently our work has a black tie event at our Xmas do, although I'm not sure if that's them winding me up.

The last few we have been to have been smart, shoes, black trousers and a nice shirt, tie if you want to and that was at the celtic manor where the Ryder cup was held!

This year we are in a different place for a change, but I just dont feel comfortable wearing the whole jazzed up malarkey :p

OP whether or not you buy or rent a tux, make sure you get patent leather (shiny leather) shoes in black. I hate seeing people wear dull black leather loafers with a tuxedo; or even worse, brown leather.

As previously stated: Tux is NOT black tie; Black tie is strictly DJ with matching black trousers, black bow tie and shiney black shoes .... Tux is usually a white jacket.

White tie is Tails etc.

One bit of sensible advice, if you've never done it before, learn well in advance how to tie a bow-tie (or get a clip on if you can't be bothered)

Ah, turns out that our do is not black tie, Smart casual, excellent :) buy new trousers, shoes, nice shirt, then after xmas party, use them for work.

Or do what one of my mates done on our way to a Sandhurst do, get in the cab and have 20 minutes to figure out how to tie a proper bow tie using an iPhone app.
The jammy git managed it as well :D

If you will possibly be going to a number of black tie events and you can rely on yourself not to get too fat over that period of time, buy the proper attire.

A regular lounge suit is not black tie and while it may pass on a student event it may not on other occasions.

Also don't think you can just buy a dinner jacket, the proper trousers and dress shirt are important also.

I recommend you buy from http://www.clermontdirect.com/ . They have options cheaper than most other places and not much dearer than hiring. In my experience they have excellent customer service.

In particular you could go for this:
http://www.clermontdirect.com/wool-package-dinner-suit-shirt-p-46.html

The website seems to be under maintenance at the moment but google's cached page is here:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...uit-shirt-p-46.html+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk
and you could give them a ring.
