'The long-awaited revamp of the Xbox 360 console, capable of displaying high definition video, has been launched.'

What? There right?

You cant display 1080p through component.

The HD DVD drive can only display 1080p through HDMI iirc.

Darnit! Still no built in wi-fi and the continued lack of a built in HD drive is unforgiveable.

I think the pricing to stay well below PS3 level has taken over their minds!

thought it did it through VGA as well ?

Think that was kind of a loop hole.

This just screams a crude business plan by Microsoft for drawing attention away from the PS3.

Apart from HD content being able to display at 1080p what about games, don't they all run at 720p? Not sure if we'll see any improvement in IQ running through HDMI over component/vga.

Its not a ps3 distraction. MS have been planning to lauch Xbox TV for quite a while offering VoD and live streaming. One of the key reasons they've not been able to release this service is the hard disk size on the current x360 unit is way to small to allow people to store downloaded video content. The 120GB drive was essential and HDMI just had to happen to support encrypted content in the future at HD resolutions.

I think the positioning of this as a set top box for digital downloads of TV etc is really where Microsoft wants to be. For as long as I can remember MS has been wanting to move out of the study and into the living room.

I suspect that we'll see when the previously announced (I think) BT/MS project gets rolled out.

Is anyone else not really seeing this as a big deal? Me personally I've been thinking about getting a 360 for sometime, and when the rumours started circulating about a new improved Xbox I thought I'd wait it out and see what MS came up with (+ possibilty of Premium reductions).

After seeing this 'elite' version I'm not in anyway bothered about getting it. To me this 'elite' version is for

1) People who want a HDMI output, and 2) for people who want to use there Xbox's as sort of a home entertainment hub (xbox HD download service), as well as for games.

Both of those points above don't really bother me. I just want to play games, games baby! so I'll be more than happy picking up a premium in the coming months (I also like the cream colour better than the black).

For those Sony's fans saying that this just shows MS are worried about the PS3 is absolute rubbish. All MS are doing are supplying a 360 which certain sections of the market want. For the vast majority of us the Premium will be fine and once again Sony....

Its all about the games baby!!!!!!!!! :p :p :p

On the BBC article some guy said:

Gamers buy these consoles to play games. Everything else is a bonus.

Thank you!

I don't care about blu ray/hd dvd or which system is slightly more powerful than the other, I will buy the one(s) with the best games.

If I could have chosen the spec for the Elite it would have been-

Gloss black. -textured plastics give it a cheap feel. Added rubber grippy bits to controller to avoid gloss + sweaty hand slippage. Dark chrome DVD tray. Blue or white LED's to finish off the look.

Built in High Def drive

Improved (quieter) cooling

Built in Wi-Fi

HDMI

2 Controlers, 2 batteries and a quick charge kit all to match the consoles finish

Smaller power brick (if possible)

120GB HDD

Built in exclusive theme(s) to match the new console colour scheme

Then slap a price ticket on it to match the PS3.

Just my opinion, what I've listed probably wouldn't sell... well I would buy one but I doubt anyone else would :p

microsoft what are u doing " hdmi doesn't matter " well what do they release a new version of 360 with hdmi and 179 for a 120 gig hdd, please hdd upgrade for ps3 can be had for a fraction of the price, and better still the internals are still the same just as noisy and unreliable I had to get rid of my 360 after going through 4, no disc/ cannot read disc faults, red light syndrome and system freeze ups, ms fix the build quality and reliability issues first instead of rear ending consumers with pointless updates and bloated peripheral prices and guess we can kiss goodbye to the system price drop
