thinking of getting a blackberry, as i could do with being able to receive email on the move, and doing this with a normal mobile is a joke.

blackberries are meant to be the best for this, but i have some questions:

i don't want to have to synch the thing with my computer every day when i get home from work, so i am hoping that its possible to set it up to download a copy of the mails but also leave them on the mailserver, which will let me get them with outlook when i come home. is this possible.

what is it like to set them up. is it just like setting up pop3 on your computer, or do you have to give user name and password details to your mobile provider (vodafone in my case).

can you view pdf, doc, txt, with them?

what happens if someone sends you a 10 meg attachment. do you get the option to skip it and leave it on the mailserver, or do you have to cancel the entire mail download and wait till you get home to an adsl connection on your computer?

hope someone can advise.

cheers

Using a 8800 on vodafone for my personal use so I should be able to answer some of these points.

You sent up your mail account with a web interface... basically you type in your e-mail address and password and the wizard does the rest and you get a message on your phone. It keeps the messages on your mail server so no problem with seeing them on another computer. In theory you never need to manually sych your blackberry with your company. You have to click on an attachment for it to open so it gives you the decision to download it or not. Able to open PDF, txt files with no issues but not sure with office files.

thanks, that is pretty helpful. sounds good so far.

one other thing that i need to know is this:

when i am travelling i use my laptop and my sony ericsson mobile to connect to the internet. although the speed of the connection is shockingly slow it still does the business. does the blackberry also works as a modem. can you connect it to your pc with bluetooth and / or a usb cable?

yep blackberrys can be used as a modem. the above poster got it pretty much spot on, vodafone will provide you with access to a web portal, you sign up there, go in and add all the email accounts that you want to be delivered to your device. vodafones server will then poll those accounts and push whatever emails are in them to your device.

how does it handle spam email, for instance about 3/4s of my emails are spam! I use spam bully in outlook that removes most of these emails. Would I find myself trawling through loads of spam messages on a blackberry in order to find my genuine mail?

aye, good point. on a normal day i might get 14 spams, and 5 mails. i use cloudmark desktop for this on my pc, but on the blackberry i am going to have a load of rubbish to sort through

very important thing that i forgot.

i have always synched my mobile contacts with outlook. can i do this with the blackberry.

i need to import all my contacts, via outlook, when i get it, and then need to keep them updated.

I've used a BB for the last 2 years for work.

You can open basically any document (although it may appear mangled).

Saved my bacon several times. Email is usually taken before it gets to a spam scanner. This is the reason I have my email notification switched off.

There's a sync when connected for contacts or you can do a lookup over the air.
