Blackbox data shared with other insurers?

I'm 23 (24 on Monday) and I drive a 65 plate, C-Class. Last year I had held my licence for 5 years, had 5 years NCB and a near to worthless pass plus certificate and I got my insurance for under £650. This was a fully comp policy, up to 20,000 (with up to half potentially business) miles, £0 voluntary, £250 compulsory, free windscreen, free breakdown, courtesy car, albeit it with a black box.

Come 30 days to renewal, the cheapest I can get quoted for is £1,200 with £500+ excesses and no real extras. However, I've been driving for another year, come close to loosing the young male charge and had another years of NCB, so theoretically it should be at least in the same ball bark with perhaps some lenience for increased insurance tax.

Now the only thing that has changed was that I got a black box for the first time, which has rated by driving as 'Bronze' on a scale of Bronze->Gold, with it stating my areas of improvement are that I sometimes accelerate too hard. Now I'm no 80 year old nan driving her 500CC micro, but compared to most yoots in german cars, I'm a very sensible driver with only occasionally giving a bit of welly but never over the top.

So does anyone know if this data is secretly being shared between insurance companies? As the % increase is just ridiculous..

Theyll say no but there'll be a loophole somewhere. There always is. Hats off to you for having a black box though, not in a million years for me.

You don't get NCD until after the first year, so he'd only have 4..

You don't get to have your license for 1 year until after the first year either

Day you pass test and buy insurance:

Held license 0 years, 0 NCB

After first year of driving:

Held license 1 year, 1 year NCB

After second year of driving:

Held license 2 years, 2 years NCB

..

After fifth year of driving:

Held license 5 years, 5 years NCB

Those black box schemes are a bit of a con from what I've seen. Probably better off without it :/

You can never quite score the highest rating on them, then they use that as an excuse to keep your premiums high. To many people fall for it.

To get any where near gold you would have to accelerate, corner and brake unrealistically slow. Don't go any where near a motorway unless you plan on going dangerously slow.

'Accelerating to hard' ...... WHAT, how can they even put that, do they know the exact circumstances in which you had to accelerate! Why have a black box at all? Let alone when you are 24 years old.

Sounds like something some rich insurance brokers thought up sat behind a desk.

No that's not how it works.

1st year 0
2nd year 1
3rd year 2
4th year 3
5th year 4
Etc
Etc
Etc

Its almost double last year? Something must be wrong somewhere surely?

That's £300 more than mine with a £100 more excess. (21, 2y NCB, R56 S - child killing speedin' yobbo).

Fox is saying once he has been driving 5years, he has 5years NCB.
You are talking about during the years, so during the 5th year he would only have 4 full years?

Man maybe the being 24 makes a huge difference...

I got quotes for 700 with BB, 900 without for a 3-Series with 0 years driving, 0 years NCD.

Figured you'd be about 500-600 :S

What the actual **** are you smoking mate?

Explain to me then, if you are starting your second insurance policy, you only have 1 years NCD to use, so when you start your 3rd policy, you have 2 years NCD to use, it's not hard to understand.

When you start your first insurance policy, you have 0 NCD, so when the year finishes and you start your 2nd policy, you have 1 years NCD.

He's right. You get the NCD only AFTER completing 12 months of cover. Otherwise you would start with 1 year :)

When you start you also have 0 years driving experience.

Have I actually been shifted into another dimension where the most basic maths doesn't apply or what?
