I slept in a room over the weekend with blackout blinds, these things are totally amazing - I slept brilliantly. I want some, but I what I don't want to do is pay over the moon for them.

I've checked a popular high street store that has a catalog (for everything under the sun), theirs are like 12 squids or so. Now I'm looking online at the average is around 25-40 quid. My folks got some fitted by some pro's and they cost over double, if not triple the amount.

Now has anyone got one of the cheaper ones? From the catalog company. I'll have to cut and install this myself - but this isn't a problem. But what I don't want to do is waste my money on tacky crap.

Help please? :)

I've seen it done cheaply with strips of velcro stuck round the window edges then just stuck on black sheeting. This was only for occasional use though.

PK!

Aye, that does sound like a fantastic idea actually. I rent atm so it wouldn't be as much of a problem to do that, rather than drilling holes into the window. Agh, that wouldn't work though as there are vertical blinds there currently so it would be difficult to have. It would make it completely black though mind.

I think we got a roller blind one from Wilkinson (the wife bought it) - was very cheap, easy to install and doesn't look tacky.

I bought 2 of the white blackout blinds from the place with a catalogue 2 weeks ago.

6 foot and 3 foot which totalled £30 I think.

They are very good. However, you will have to get the length of the holes to mount them spot on or they will fall down when you pull the chain.

The quality of the blind is good. They are mounted on a cardbord roll and the fixings are plastic but as I say, get the mounting holes correct and you will be fine.

We looked at other retailers and they were charging stupid amounts for basically the same thing tbh.

If you're mounting them on Plasterboard, I reccommend you screw a length of wood across the top of the window first to put the blinds on.

Gah, I'm in two minds now.

Velcro one:
+ Complete Black out
+ Easy to fit
+ Doesn't require me to drill into anything, landlord = happier.
- More faffing about opening/closing the thing.
- Will look crud when open.

Roller one:
+ Easy to open/close
+ Will look alright when open/closed.
- Not complete blackout, but I've only got white vertical blinds atm so it'll be a massive improvement non the less.
- Not as easy to fit, but not really that hard if I'm honest.

My Dad'll probably installing the roller as he's visiting this week anyway.

Decisions, decisions - I'm crap a making them!

My landlord is a stickler for any holes drilled but I still installed Rollers.

We will keep them hung when we leave as they didnt cost much. Failing that, take them down when you move and fill the holes in.

Rollers do look a lot better. It took me an hour to do both blinds, including cutting the 3ft one to 2ft.

We have the one from the catalog in our sons room. Its fairly easy to put up (even I managed it and I'm useless at diy) It does leave a slight light border around it (not too much) If you also have curtains up then it will eliminate all light.

I can't really advise you more than what's been given already, but I agree blackout blinds are great! I like it to be as dark as possible when I sleep, so I have them and it just makes so much difference, especially if I don't want to get up early ;)
