BlackShark cracked on day zero :(

So basically you reckon piracy is here to stay and theres nothing anyone can do.

yep, there will always be people willing to crack stuff and always people willing to download it.

And there are always people willing to pay more for crackers than people pay for security.

So presumeably for all the ones you didn't buy you imediatly uninstalled/deleted content and sent a check off to the developers for the rental price?

As I said I have downloaded very few games, any I did I have uninstalled. Want me to post a pic of my "Games" in Vista + boxes and loaves of bread?

I have paid for far more games that have been uninstalled straight away than I have downloaded (Spore, Cod4, UT3 to name a recent few).

If you want to test a game legally rent it, but of course that would cost money and just be far to hard wouldn;t it ;)

Show me where I can rent PC games and I will do. It is not a question of money.

But these are people who have apprently just bought the game, so thier the type not to know how.

And who the hell dl's cracks from torrent:confused:

they're borderline legal, get em of a proper sever.

Well if you're searching for something to download then surely it would be easier just to search there. You can get them from a multude of places and torrents / P2P being a massive one. Yes you can still download them off a website but I was just pointing out one place to download. Torrents normally have them earlier as well than websites.

If you've just bought the game that doesn't neccessarily mean you have no know how. It just means you've made a conscious decision to go out and buy that game. With all the hassle that surrounded Spore and the activation rubbish on that it wouldn't suprise me if people researched it first then made the decision to bypass the activation rubbish in there. Same for many other titles, especially those from EA.

I wouldn't mind this. I detest the fact that there is some stupid ideology that people using consoles don't copy games. It's just as easy on consoles and it's easier to obtain games (i.e. rental). Plus no CDKeys.

Got me thinking about what steps the publishers might take next to protect us from pirates.

Uhm.... what makes you think we need protecting from software pirates?

Muggers, drug dealers, burglars certainly. Software pirates? Er.... no.

I disagree there, to pirate a game on the 360 or Wii you need to actually open it up and modify the firmware or hardware, as we all know piracy isn't possible on the PS3 yet.

Also with most PC games if you were able to rent them, simply apply a NOCD crack and then return the game hence why nobody lets you rent or trade in PC games.

It is not a noble quest you ignorant forum goer, it is simply that it without playing a game you simply cannot tell if it is good any more. There is not a single review site or magazine you can trust any more, so best trust yourself.

Demo it, if a demo isn't available wait until release and rent it.

Or are you that against shelling out for something?

I mean would you steal a car for two days, drive a 40+ miles and give it back saying "Sorry I just wanted to test it before I bought it"?

No, no you wouldn't.

Difference is no one is stealing anything, flawed analogy.

EA

Makes "really tough" anti piracy thing's + Pirates = Challenge = hacked / pirated twice as quickly.

Again someone is mentioning renting. I have never, ever, seen a place to rent PC Games. And as I have already stated, it is not a question of money (for me). But I do resent paying £25-30 for something I am not going to use.

Using your (flawed) analogy, you would buy a car without testing it but then not drive it because the engine only works 30% of the time or has a top speed of 10mph? But its ok! You bought it!

it boils down to 'how' you interpret your actions ...

would you go to a store and take a cd/game without paying ? would you download the same cd/game , again without paying ? ... taking the physical cd/game means the shop loses a potential sale and therefore the item has been illegally stolen, whereas obtaining the cd/game without taking the physical property is different , but its still illegal and is theft.

there is no justification for downloading music or software no matter how bad the opinion is of the product , and we are already seeing the impact of mass 'pirating' with software companies trying any methods they can to stop (hinder) illegal downloads but alas failing in their bids to control it. The consequences affect developers through their revenue which in turn means closure and less software developed (bad news for everyone).

i personally have wasted lots of money on really poor games including Spore, Unreal tournament III and Hellgate London for example even after playing the demo's and beta's. Ive also spent loads of money going to the cinema to watch some dreadful garbage and the same with going out for food.

some would say i should have just downloaded the games or movies first thus saving me money, which ofc it would have. Im no Saint and im not on my high horse its just i dont believe in 'that' option of stealing someone's craft whether its digitally or physically. If people didnt pay for the service my company offers i'd be out of a job...

Yes, where can you rent pc games from? It's a good question.

Not in Belgium that's for sure...

The Belgian Entertainment Association (representing game publishers) revealed that starting Dec. 1, 2008, you will no longer be able to rent games in Belgium. While renting out video games was never legally allowed, it has been condoned for many years. The BEA managed to pass a law, in effect since Jun. 1, that new titles could no longer be rented out, but the current stock could, but only until December. Outlets like GameMania cry foul play, claiming that banning rentals will reduce business by 10%.

They'll never make anything "hackproof", I mean look at Microsoft... didn't they get government help to make the security for Vista? And it got hacked within 2 weeks (whilst it's not a game, it's the same deal).

Really though some games people are shooting themselves in the foot, like Bioshock and it's suspected rootkit and maximum installations. Why should the legitimate buyer have to go through all that rubbish and get the short straw when the people that get the cracked game don't have to put up with any of that as the crackers remove that stuff.

I've no idea if they got any help at all, but I imagine if they got outside security advice it would be for the security of the OS, not anti piracy measures.

Those that have asked about PC game rental, there was an on-line service. Can't remember if it had time restriction on the download, or only allowed for something like 6 games to be downloaded in a month. Someone else can provide the name.

Probably doesn't have all the latest releases, as the different publishers would want to keep all the profits.
