Blackwell gpus

Are the FE's in general better for coil whine?

Neither my 3080 or 4080 have/had coil whine.

Only my first 4090fe had coil whine, the second and third (lol) were silent.

I think it's look of the draw, though Gigabyte putting Thermal pads on everything helped in the launch months when they were all terrible (especially the premium Rog and Suprims). Both of those models had revisions a few months in.

I had terrible coil whine on 3080 fe it was high pitched , the replacement also has it but it's much lower not the same high pitch gets mostly drowned out when the fans kick in
Coil whine isn’t damaging to the gpu but rather annoying gaming without headphones or productivity work.

It’s impossible to guarantee no coil whine and if there’s still a FE limit in the other place that’s an Nvidia authorised outlet then you are kind of stuck with coil whine…. 5090 for £2k would be a very expensive coil whine!

But it shouldn't be something that you should live with when it's such a lottery and you paying the same while someone else doesn't have it , considering how much these cost now

I got FE replaced for coil whine no issues

I totally agree with you. It’s great retailers are open to RMA- I had mine turned down within the first month by that very same retailer for a 3090 FE that was whining like a cat! Ended up reselling it during the GPU crises due to the whine and got a 3080 in 2021 that was very nearly silent.

Hope they have improved the quality of the components in the FE 5090 to reduce whine - I presume it’s the capacitors that are making the noise?

I had a couple of 4090s that were perfect in that regard (3 of the 8 I'd say).

It's a massive pain but getting on that dosnt sound like a beard trimmer going is worth it. Pointless me having such a good sound setup with that going on in the corner. That being said its the same node and I think they are more aware of the issue now and how to avoid it. Charge me a premium price, I expect a premium product. :)

I've never had a beard trimmer either. I seem to end up somewhere in the middle all the time. Whine that you can hear if you go out of you way, but not dead silent.

If I was paying x90 money, I think I would want silent as well. How do you swap so many, don't the shops get fed up and just stop accepting your order eventually?

I always shopped around, some I sold on ebay. They weren't always returns.

I did threaten Nvidia with legal action and got offered 5 free game codes and a swap lol, but that's a story for a different day. We are friends again now lol.

3GB modules potentially not as far off as previously thought.
Imagine paying £1000+ for a 4080 and a 24gb version comes out a year later. :(

Lol 24gb 5080 Super incoming

5080 16gb owners are already feeling depressed before they've even bought the 5080

For all Nvidia does wrong I think they did really well not doing a 4090 ti/super. If someone it paying that much of a premium they should be top dog for longer than a year. It gives you confidence a 5090 and so on will also carry on this trend.

To be fair I didn't feel 10gb lacking with my 3080 and the upgrade was only an extra 2gb at a much higher cost.
Neither did I until Hogwarts Legacy bent it over and I had to put up with the missus making fun of me because her 12GB card ran it better.

Bought a 4090 the next day. Wasn't going to stand for being immasculated like that
