I'm currently putting together a system for the kids based on an ASUS P5GV-MX board with a 3.6Ghz P4.

My problem is that on trying to install XP Home I get the message

"setup is inspecting your hardware configuration"

Followed by a blank screen...forever.

The strange thing is. everything seems correctly setup in the bios and If I use my Symantec recovery disk the hard drive (Seagate 7200.10 250Gb) shows up ok and it gets past the inspecting stage and lets me do whatever I want (boots off CD)

All components seem to be working ok, this PC is a hybrid of several PCs of old.

It only has 1 IDE port and I'm using XP Home SP3.

Any pointers? One thought is that this board is allergic to installing on a 3Gb/sec drive, is that possible? I don't have the jumper to set it to 1.5 anymore.

edit - Incredibly, I found a jumper cap....it didn't work.

Have you enabled SATA in the BIOS? and have you made is as far as the F6 floppy drivers for SCSI/SATA and RAID yet?.
if all else fails try sticking Linux Mint or Ubuntu on it just to check all the hardware is OK.

Problem solved, it wasn't a brand new hard drive so I stuck it in my main PC and deleted the partition that was on it, hey presto, up and running.

Cheers anyway :)
