Had an old SB-Z start being weird. Seems time to replace it (getting artifacts in audio when DX overlay is active).

Which of the above would be considered "best" for a headphone user. Nothing too heavy/crazy (though I might fancy some planar driven high ohm at some point).

Not sure about the middle two.

I know the gsp is garbage. Which hurts me as sennheiser are one of only two audio headphones I would buy (along with shure).

I have the ae-5. Stonking. I was gonna sell it with my new board upgrade. But decided its still better.

Did you try reinstalling drivers?
Microcrap and Wintoys might have just automessed something once again...

If you mean GSX1000 it's not even at level of SB Z, or actually even Audigy Fx in D/A coversion quality.
Because its cheap sound chip is meant for cheap phones/tablets.
Naturally it doesn't have any more headphone amplifier either than those devices.

Sound Blaster X3 is tech wise around SB Z level in DAC and what seems to be little better headphone output.
Because of physics customized HRTF would certainly give better directionality for people with head shape differing more from average.
But mostly Creative has been doing half assed job in aiming it mostly for music instead of gaming and neither there are much settings for it besides enabling/disabling it.
Though Creative has updated algorithm and older processing and HRTF are there with their settings.

SBX AE-5 and G6 are tech wise overall pretty equal and very good and capable to driving most headphones you could buy.
Feature wise I rank SBX G6 ahead:
Besides volume control (lacked by way too many expensive keyboards) it also has those other physical controls.
That allows very easy disabling of processing, if wanting to listen music directly/having binaural recordings and equally easy enabling processing for games/movies.
In internal sound card you need to open software for doing that setting change.

Ty guys. Went with a replacement SBZ in the end.
The issue came about after some hot plugging/unplugging of headphones, was absolutely fine and no change in anything seconds before so... dunno.
G6 will likely be my go-to next time I have issues or when I see one cheap :)

I did mean GSX1000, yes. Glad I avoided if it was crap.

Could have even been some ESD during that.
Or then connector simply caused partial short before it reached correct position and that damaged output.
Hot plugging things not designed for that has traditionally been at least slightly risky thing.

Yeah, it's fine. Lesson learned there.

SBZ is a _relatively_ cheap part (£30), bought the previous one second hand for pennies and had it a couple of years so it didn't owe me anything. Another of the same will do for now :D

Got the answer I wanted too. Seems the G6 would be a good option :)

Edit: lol I put a lowball offer in for a G6 on ebay too (review sample so almost new), been accepted so I'll be able to compare directly :D
