How can I uninstall Windows Media Player from Vista? All I want is Winamp but mp3 files are defaulting to WMP. There's no option in WMP to relinquish control of files and if I set them up in Winamp, the settings don't stick. :(

I also cant enable right-click context menus with Winamp either. Any help getting rid of this POS software appreciated! :)

Will check on my laptop later but can't you just go to Tools in any Explorer window, Folder Options and then set mp3s to Winamp in the File Types tab? :)

Just Tick/Untick all the bits you want WMP to run in here...

You might need a Reboot here to MAKE WMP relinquish its hold on them!!..

Then Set them to Defult in winamp here...

Works for me every install!!! :)

You might even want to tick the 'Restore File Associations.....' in winamp to be sure nowt steals em back!!

Click Start->Default Programs (On the right hand side of the Start Menu).

Click 'Set your default programs'. After its loaded your'll be able to adjust the settings for Media Player by selecting it and clicking 'Choose defaults for this program'.

close winamp and then open it by right clicking your winamp icon and "run as administrator". that should make the settings stick. :)

Options to check/uncheck are greyed-out. :(

It seems to stick but file icons remain as WMP.

Explorer Shell Right-click options are only enabled for single files. [edit] scrub that, they've gone back to ***** media player...

There must be a way to remove WMP?

:(

it ought to be in "Add/remove windows components" in the add/remove programs whatsit.

you can't remove windows media player in any version of windows. it's built in to the OS. you can hide it in windows xp but it doesn't uninstall it.

Thats what i do & for most programs its works.

So it does, sorry didn't notice that. Rather pointless to give you the option but not let you adjust it :o

I guess the only other way would be to goto the properties of say one of your .mp3 files then change the program it opens with that way.

Im sure you can rightclick on the MP3 & Open With-> Choose Default Program then browse to WinAmp.exe if its not in the Recommended or Other Programs dropdown menu & make sure the always use this program for this file type is ticked.
