After reading through the Mass Effect thread (a game I'm probably 60% or so through, but I've got a lot of side quests to do) I'm just wondering - why do people 'blitz' through games? Some games are more suited to this gameplay style than others, but Mass Effect is such a story based game, it seems to me this is equivalent to speed/skim reading a good book. Yes, you get the gist of the plot, but do you get the full enjoyment.

One of the wonderful things about Mass Effect is the story (despite being a little bit cliched - but it is sci-fi) and the voice acting and characters are so good, it makes me want to hear what they've got to say. I particularly love the interplay between squad members (especially on your ship) and I couldn't imagine rushing through the game and missing the 'meat' so to speak.

So, for those of you that do rush through games - what's the appeal? Is it finishing it before anyone else? Do you do the same with books (and, for that matter, fast forward DVDs)? Or do you just find dialogue/exposition boring?

I too am a little staggered at hearing how people have blitzed through it all 15 hours or so. I'm 12 hours in and am only a couple of hours into the 1st planet since leaving the citadel. Assassin's Creed seems to have pulled me away atm though but I am looking forward to getting back.

I can sort of understand it with some games, but in a way I almost feeling it's betraying the developers/writers who spend hundreds of hours writing the story and for someone to say 'sod it, that just doesn't interest me' seems a little, I don't know, ignorant...

I usually blitz games i have on rental so i can send it back and get another a.s.a.p.

If i have bought the game i usually take it slower. Like Mass effect for example i finished after 20 hours but am playing it again as a renegade.

there's a guy here who does that - always find it funny when he gets a new game delivered Friday morning, then ask him how it was on Monday - 'it was good, but I think when they said 15 hours gameplay, they were being a bit generous'

personally I like to take my time and really take everything in. I'm in no rush to finish things

Maybe it's an age thing. I'm thirtysomething and I like pleasures to last (oo-er) as much as possible. As opposed to when I was younger, and it was as much as possible, as quick as possible ;)

I'm twentysomething and so is this guy, so I don't think you can correlate it to age. like most things, it's just down to the individual (and probably the variety, or lack thereof, of their social life!)

I find it's the other way round - now I'm in my thirties, I seem to have less patience with games than when I was in my teens. If I had been playing GTA:SA ten years ago, I would probably have taken the time to do all the sidequests, find all the hidden items, all the tags, etc etc but now I just want to get on and finish the damn story!

The reason I blitzed through the game is because the storyline was so compelling I had to find out what happened. I'm on my 2nd play-through as a renegade and Ive done 1 planet since leaving the citadel. 11hours in or so.

played through mass effect three times

first time took under 15hours and i did read all *** dialogue and a handful of side quests whilst also exploring a bit aswell, after that i played it again to absorb the whole thing, gaining completionist in 25hours of playing it, and finally the blitz run in about 5hours where i didn't even read anything or go anywhere else

for me i will always play a game at a comfortable pace to what i feel natural, which is generally quite quickly compared to some people. i've been known to reload a game just to hear a peice of dialogue i've missed if it was interesting

other than that i do blitz through games afterwards as a personal challenge and replay it multiple times to absorb the entire experiance

I blitzed through Mass Effect becuase I didn't want a £40 game sat in my xbox for weeks while I needed the cash. Games are to expensive for me to have more than one atm.

Achievements are why people blitz through games :)

I don't think that's true atall, If you blitz through a game, only thing you'd get is the ending achievement. 90% of the achievements on Mass effect for instance, are achieved by hardening your character in set ways. Or doing a set amount of side quests, or accumulating this that or the other, Which cant be done by blitzing through. Same with a lot of other games

As for blitzing at all, I don't do it. Not on RPGs anyway, I like to accomplish as much as possible.

I always take my time through RPG's, but I still finished ME in 25hrs or so. I did a good proportion of the side quests before realising that they had too many repeated and reused elements so I then focused on the main storyline.

well then why don't you wait a few months till you can pick it up cheap 2nd hand, that's what I do, which is why I have yet to experience Mass effect, but when I do I will take my time

Only if they are poo

Im still yet to complete Mass Effect (25 hours in i think) and ive had it a few weeks, slowly playing through and loving it :)

Yip definately agree. I just ran through TMNT in about 5 hours.

Good games like PGR4, I like to take my time.

Most of the games ive had ive blitzed through....mainly because i just want to finish the damn game. I think out of all the games ive had, bought that is...ive only played 2 games where ive received the full 1000pts lol. Seriously i just finish off the SP mode then take them to be traded...not really into the whole 1000pt achievement thing...if i get 500-900 pts then im happy.

blitzing thru games can be an art in first person shooters, eg speed running in the doom and quake series :)
