Blizzard Auctioning Server Blades

Blizzard Entertainment is offering a series of special charity auctions featuring server hardware originally used during World of Warcraft’s early days. We’ve since upgraded the game’s infrastructure with the latest technology to offer an even better player experience, but these “honorably discharged” server blades are now unique collectors’ pieces.

The net proceeds from the auction will go to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

What don't you understand?

They are selling some blades that were used as Warcraft servers to raise money for charity, it's not difficult.

Heh, could even buy the very server I used to play on.

Ach no word of specs. Seem to remember talk of 4 way Opteron clusters from what I can remember.

Should clairfy, whats the deal with the realms, is all the data on them, so people can access it? I don't know anything about how these game servers work so...

Its the blades the servers had been based on in the past. All the Warcraft information has been wiped off them and their not intended for practical use.

I might check out the auction for the realm I play on, but I cant imagine wanting to pay more than a token amount for it, charity or not.

Aye, I imagine its just empty or no disks in them. Given they are blades they will probably have been connected to a SAN or some other resilient storage at the back end.

If they are indeed from launch, much more than they are worth, since they barely worth their value in scrap metal.

Think we used to buy HP G2 blades for, well, nothing, usually got them for free with decom'd units back at my old job

Credit to them though, its one of the more inventive manners of server disposal

Servers are going up, and they come in display cases with a plaque which names the realm they are as well. Looks pretty awesome, but pricey.
