Blizzard's Real-ID system and the OcUK forums

I've a funny feeling that the real name I've associated with this account is Antar Bolaeisk so wouldn't really bother me in the unlikely scenario of OcUK deciding on such a system.

I wouldn't like for people to be able to associate my real name with this one though as this identity is created for the Internet.

Wonder how long it'll be before there's a squabble online that will lead to a real life death with the blame laid solely at the feet of the realID system.

I can see a lot of positives and a lot of negatives:

Positives:
It removes the anonymity - from a positive perspective it should make people think a little bit more about what they are saying.

Negatives:
I wonder how this will link into / be affected by the data protection act.
Libel cases could become more prominent as it will be far easier to identify the name of the author.
How will this affect the forum owners?

Says my name in Trust and it's not exactly hard to work out my real name from my username, you just have to spell it right, without looking in trust obviously. :D

edit------>

Oh wait, my last name isn't on there. You just have to hover over my sig then to see what my email is and then you'll get my full name. :D

Im sure the female MMO players are gonna be happy about this.

Yeah, the females in my guild wont be posting, they mentioned this last night.

Apparently one of Blizzards employees posted his full name on the boards yesterday in light of this news to show that he had no issues with it. My friend showed me a blog where someone now has found out all his details, I'll see if i can find it.

I don't see how this could be a good thing at all. I can imagine kids finding all sorts of information about people they don't like in game and using it to harass the players and their families.
I can also see it being awful for female players - I used to get a lot of attention on vent or in guilds just for being a girl and some of it was outright creepy. It was always my choice to give out my name or protect my privacy when I played WoW.

EDIT: I wouldn't be as bothered on a forum like this because emotions aren't so highly charged. I don't think my gender is always obvious when I post though (despite the name and pink sig ;)) and I like it that way rather than having a big banner that says "I'm a GIRL".

Agreed, it's already easy enough to track down people and harass if that's your thing this just make it easier, living on a small island there's only one family with the surname I have.
Not that I'll cry or care if this does go ahead with.

If you knew my name I'd have to kill you all

On a serious note, we choose our level of exposure and if sites choose to use your information beyond the level of exposure you are willing to tolerate it's their perogative to do so but it is also your perogative not use that site anymore and request to have your details removed and account closed.

sup Richard Trick

We sort of already have this with the trust system...

Apparently it's to reduce the amount of trolling that goes on in the forums. Thought this summed up what difference it will make nicely :p
