ok here is the situation:

My son is on a dual boot system: win98 [for old games] & XP [for everything else]. I have just purchased some internet filtering software but this will only work on his XP partition.

What (preferably reversable) methods can I use to ensure his win98 OS will not be able to access the internet?

[oops probably wrong forum doh]

depends how good your son is. you could just disable the network adaptor in the bios if its onboard or remove it if its pci.

that's bit extreme. what about when you want to boot back into xp.....

in windows 98, just goto the properties of the network card/modem and remove the tcpip protocol... :p

That would disable it for the XP install as well though ;)

I'm not sure on the ins and outs of windows 98 but I guess there will be a hosts file somewhere- probably %windir%\system\drivers\etc\hosts on win 98. Anyway, there should be a file called 'hosts'. Open it in notepad and an entry like

Code:
*                 localhost

*should* work because it directs all outbound traffic back at the local machine :)

Have you tried playing old games on xp using the compatibility wizard?

Yeah. Some work some don't.
Dungeon Keeper2 was a swine under XP -pretty much the only reason we have a dual boot on his pc in the first place. Was thinking about going back to dual boot on mine too cos it's such a cool game. This is one reason why I'd like to be able to reverse whatever I do to his win98 so if I ever go back to dual boot on my pc we will be able to play vs each other on win98 without the random crashes/lockups we'd get on XP :D

ps. hmm..when you say "wizard" you do mean where you right-click on a shortcut and/or .exe file & go into properties?

ok plan 2, might work, if you give the 98 device a different ip addy than the xp one, then on your router block the http port for the 98 address

That's the option I'd go for, fast, effective and most people won't know about it.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I will have a play around with it after work tonight while the nipper is doing his homework in the kitchen :)

I will try your suggestion Trigger. If I can find this file 'hosts' do I just add the entry * localhost to whats already there or delete everything else 1st?

No, don't delete everyting- I doubt that there is anything active in it anyway as it will all be commented out :) When you find the file, just make sure your new entry lines up with the example so put the * on the left-hand side and then 'localhost' however many tab spaces it is in :)

You could install a proggie like Cyberpatrol then you have complete control over what he can and can't use internet-wise. You can just bar his access unless he knows the password.

Re-read the first post, you seem to have missed something ;)

heh well his internet connection is down completely at the moment -had to uninstall the trial version of ContectProtect before I could upgrade it to the latest full version & it has fubar'd his network connection completely. Mind you, he'd already screwed up both versions of windows by never shutting the pc down properly & installing stuff designed only for win 95 etc so I just blamed him lol.
Got to get him back online asap though cos the missus keeps letting him use her logon on my pc

Will do a full reformat & reinstall at the weekend and then take it from there :)
