Blockbuster to focus on Blu-ray

Well, this looks like the start of the end for HD-DVD.

Certainly looks like, I was also looking elsewhere and BR films were out selling HD-DVD by a factor of 2 to 1. Didn't Betamax also suffer the same fate with Video rentals back in the 80s?

Probably, and looks like Sony learned from their mistakes with Betamax and this Blockbuster deal is certainly their push to make sure Blu-ray succeed.

On the plus side, at least I now know which next gen format to get without the fear it will be redundant next year.

DVDs look absolutely dreadful on larger TVs.

How about dvd players with really good upscalers? I watched a couple films using one of these on a big hd tv, and they looked awesome.

i hope so, sony seems to have invested so much in the ps3 and blu ray they really cant afford not to succeed.

If you are a Sony fan that is :p

I honestly don't care, i just want it to sorted out sooner rather than later. The longer it drag on, it is the consumer who losses out.

if sony looses so much on the ps3 surely it wont have as much to invest on the harware/games for the ps4 which could lead to microsoft dominating the console market and i dont think anyone wants to see that happen(all wild speculation though).

So Sony Dominates makes it ok ? But lets not turn this into a PS3 v 360 thread, because it isn't. I wasn't even thinking about that when I posted the last comment.

PPPPPLLLLLLEEEEEEAAAAASSSSSSSEEEEEEE don't let this comment turn this thread into a flame war. But I haven't really kept of with this as of late, I did a while back, but lost interest.

ALL I want to know is, does Blu-Ray offer a noticeable increase in quality compared to HD-DVD (as I remember it, HD-DVD looked noticeably better)?

The only answers I require are:

Yes is does offer a noticeable increase in quality.

No, HD-DVD offers a noticeable increase in quality.

Or

No, neither offer any noticeable increase in quality over the other.

Thank you. :)

Some early blu-ray releases used an inferior codec and have pretty poor pq compared to early hd-dvd releases. However newer blu-ray releases use a difference codec, and in my experience there is no difference in picture quality between the two formats. Bear in mind that both formats have some exceptional transfers and also some pretty poor ones, so its a good idea to check out reviews of any films you're considering to see what the consensus on picture quality for that release is.

One thing that I think gets overlooked with both formats is the vastly improved sound quality the new lossless audio both formats use, to me its as good a reason to upgrade as the improved picture quality, assuming of course you have a decent sound system.

I can't see either format winning conclusively in the near future. Both camps seem to have too much invested to let either die a quick death.

{snip}What's wrong with DVDs? They seem fine to me.
Aside from the quality factor, there's the fact the 'tough' DVD encryption was cracked/hacked. A 10-year old can easily copy a DVD :( :)
