My wifes sister cannot access her baby chat forum. She wants to get on but she just cant! We have tried releasing / renewing IP address but no joy!

She can access it from my computer but not her own? She thinks that the site may have done it deliberately as she had a row with the chief of the forums! :p

What can she do? Anyway she can get around it if she has been blocked by the site?

In that case, it's quite possible the admin blocked her if she had an argument with him. He can simply find out her IP address from one of her posts and add it to the block list.

Try reset her router so she gets a new IP address (providing she hasn't got a static IP from her ISP). They obviously don't want her around if they have blocked the IP though...

Could you try take a laptop round to her house, plug it into her network and see if you can access it? That way you can determine whether it's her local PC or not.

Also clear your browser cache etc which should remove any cookies in case one is 'bad' and the site recognises it and blocks access.

You could also try a different browser, that would usually confirm if its an IP address type block if that doesn't work also.

She is on Virgin and uses an ordinary modem supplied with by them. What if she gets a new modem off of them will that make her able to view the site? Would that also change the static ip address if that is what she has?

Virgin only offer DHCP/dynamic IPs not static, so it'll change eventually. If she really has been banned though, why does she want to go back? Take the hint and don't start rows with admins in future? :p

She wants to contact a few mates and on that website is the only way of getting in touch.

But, changing the modem and getting that activated by virgin will mean that the IP address will then change?

It would be very rare for the IP to change on it's own. I've had the same IP for what seems like years now. They seem to tie the IP to the MAC address behind the modem - be it router or a PC. You can however change it via various means.

One way would be to change (or spoof) the MAC address on the router, but this doesn't apply to you. Another method is to power off the modem completely for a certain period - not sure on the exact time, but it would be in hours, most likely an overnight job.

The easiest method is to just use VM's proxy, you only need to add the connection info to the settings of the browser, and so aren't messing around with disconnecting stuff. At times the proxy can be slow so you can just disable it for normal browsing.

The proxy is webcache.virginmedia.com and the port can be 3128 or 8080. Now this should get you viewing the site, providing another user hasn't got it blocked too. :)

Information about the VM webcache can be found here and you can check the proxy is working by visiting whatismyip.com.

Thing is, she just ordered a new Modem with VM and they said when it arrives to ring them up, give the Mac address underneath the modem so that they can activate it. Surely this will change the original IP address?

You dont need to change the modem, just leave the modem off for a good few hours - hopefully someone else will get allocated the old ip address, power back on and you should have a new unblocked ip :)

However as a new modem is already on its way, get that activated and you should get a new ip anyway.

You could always use the government approach and throw money at the problem by getting a wireless router where you can change the MAC address. Usually changing the MAC address on ex blueyonder lines causes a change of ip address - just change one digit of the WAN MAC address in the router everytime and hard power cycle to change your ip on demand :)
