blocking bit comet

I'll have to look into this myself I've a linksys router. No idea if I can even telnet into mine or not.

My housemate limits his upload but runs 4-5 versions of a torrent program.

Sort of defeats the point of limiting upload really lol.

Just upgraded my firmware and enabled this qos option.

So hopefully my webpages will actually work and I wont get a ping of 4000 in online games now.

*Ahem* FTP, HTTPS, Games........not the most flexibe/practicle of plans.

QoS keeps everyone happy, he gets to DL when he likes and everyone can browse happily. The solution isn't always "kill it dead". on a 1meg connection set the max burstable to 75-80% of the connection and max sustained to 50-60%. That way short DLs will get near full speed, long torrents will only take half the bandwidth away from you. Most routers support this, even my Speedtouch 510 does. But as before, and like my speedtouch, the web app doesn't have the reature- you need to telnet the LAN ip of the router in hyperterminal or CMD.exe :)

For a 2 meg connection you can give more to burst as you need only a few KB/s for browsing, 100KB/s for games max.

i have telnet but no qos how do i telnet the lan ip?

There was a thread here a while ago where you could change the registry to limit upload/download speeds.

I had it bookmarked but the thread is no longer here :(

Could really do with it as my step brother and sister are always downloading with Limewire and BitTorrent  The connection is slow enough without those two killing it even more.

slatey, if you can gain access to his PC, you could do the registry tweak.

Command prompt and type "tenet" followed by a space and then the IP address of your router. Which should be the ones they gave you to connect to in the instructions. I'll lay odds on 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.138.

so can i turn it on and off at will?

i have solved the problem....i had to buy the NETGEAR (WPN824) RANGEMAX MIMO 108Mbps WIRELESS CABLE ROUTER which allows you to block a certain ip address and port range .i bought this to solve two problems one of which was the bit comet problem the other being the range of my other router and black spots.the black spots are still a problem because of the solid construction of the building im in.can i use the original router a floor below and get rid of the blackspots using wireless meaning using two wireless setups on one ntl connection??

If you can put a network cable to the second location, disable DHCP, give it an IP in the same range as the other Netgear (but out of it's DHCP pool), then connect it via one of the LAN ports, you'll be able to use it as a wireless access point.

I need 3 or 4 access points to cover the house here :(

the problem i got is that bit comet if it cant find an available port it looks for another and another till it finds one, so unless everything is blocked i've no idea how its done

think what you are on about is changing the TCP recieve window...

RWIN's more latency dependant. Increasing it would improve speeds to sites with higher latency, at the expense of the sites with lower latency (apparently).
Higher RWIN would also mean more reduced throughput in the event of errors.
