could do with your help as i dont kno if i can do it this way and if i can how.

thanks luke

how can access her host file from my computer? and thanks for quick reply

I assume you have some sort of access to the files on sisters laptop via a network connection. If you don't already have that set up it could be difficult.

If you can get access to the hosts file, then simply edit it in notepad and add the line I gave in my previous post.

You may have some complications even if you do have file access:

1) You may not have the correct permissions to access that file.

2) When searching for the file you may have to select "show system and hidden files".

3) The file attributes for the hosts file may be set to "read only". You would need to change the file attributes in this case to edit the file. If you do this, remember to reset the read only atrribute after editing, for security reasons.

4) Any anti-virus or any anti-spyware software you have installed may block you from editing the hosts file, so may have to be temporarily disabled while you edit the file.

Really need to know what sort of file access you have to your sisters laptop?

check your router, some makes have the ability to block webpages. I use a linksys wrt54gl with tomato firmware and i can block any type of connection (meaning any website, or range of websites, or other traffic), i can limit when that block is in place (such as weekdays online, or to block it after a certain time at night), and i can limit that block to specific computers on the network.

If you are serious about stopping your sister accessing those websites, then if your current router doesnt have that ability, it may be worth looking into the router i mentioned.

What you really mean is she's lagging your games? :p
Cue lots of shouting when youtube stops working for her lol.
Might be worth rate limiting the PC instead. She'll only find a substitute... p2p et al and you're back to square one; 300 ping.

May be worth a go if its on your network to see if you can see the c$ share on her laptop.
Go in, edit file and no one is the wiser.

Of course, may no longer work like that anymore......but worth a go :)

Why not just tell your Mum to do her job properly !

Seconded, if it really is your mum thats bothered by this you tube use and not just you having a hissy fit because it effects your gaming then she needs to step up to the plate and do some parenting.
