I have become quite interested in writing over the past year and recently decided to start a blog. This is mainly for my purpose to improve my somewhat poor writing skills and grammar etc but it would be nice to get some feedback from the world wide web. For the record I am a final year maths and engineering masters degree student and have zero experience or teachings in writing or English past high school.

I am more than willing to accept criticism, however if you think blogging is "weird and sad" then don't bother reading it. No one is forcing you. ;)

I have so far only made 4 posts, my aim is to cover anything and everything and give it a witty twist but we will see how that works. It is definetely a work in progress. I will try to update it every couple of days but won't write unless I have something interesting to talk about. Might give the thread a bump when I post something new depending on the nature of the feedback.

Would be cool to hear what you guys think. :)

Immediate impression is that it has nothing to make it stand out from any of the hundreds of thousands of others which are much the same.

Pics may help liven it up a bit.

Thats a fair point, however I am not trying to do anything new here, its just a way of improving my writing skills. This seemed like the easiest way to do it...plus it is quite good fun.

Imo you don't need to have a heavy audience to blog. You should do it because you enjoy it, and if it helps you improve your writing then that's an added bonus!

When I started blogging I probably had no readers for months, now I get a few random hits here and now plus a few regulars, I get a lot of hits on one particular article that sometimes dribbles views to the rest of my blog, but I'd still do probably do it without readers, because I enjoy it.

Although the layout is a bit bland, and as said, it needs pictures.

Wall after wall of text puts me off most the time. :)

Thanks for your opinion...good to hear from another blogger. Will take everything onboard and take it from there. :)

I've just had a quick scan of your blog. It seems to be about you and what you've been upto. Most people won't care about what you're upto or what's going on in your life, and so the blog won't be popular.

If you want a popular blog - blog about things that affect other people, the larger the number of people influenced/affected/helped by your writing, the larger your audience.

However, if you simply want to keep a diary-like blog, carry on - it can only be a good thing (on the writing skill side that is...) :)

Without commenting on your content, I'll give some grammatical observations (all intended to be constructive):

First post: "That was not a brag and it is certianly not something... If you spend more than 10 minutes with me you will know that I like to talk a lot... and maybe give my friends lugs"

Watch your spelling! ("Certainly"; is "a lot" really a word? "Lugs" is very colloquial)

The second post: "Lets get topical" could benefit from some hyphens, but that's a personal style rather than a rule.

The third and most recent post read ok, and the spelling has been sorted ;) The only advice I would offer is a style point - be careful not to over-use parentheses.

The above advice seems quite helpful. If I were you, I would keep going. Even if nobody reads it your writing can only benefit (along with your confidence) which can only be a good thing for an engineering/maths student.
