I'm interested in starting a blog. Searched through the forum and it seems most people on here rate Wordpress as the best software to use for it, but that doesn't answer what I think the main question is for me: what are the pros and cons of publishing it on a blogging site (eg. Wordpress, Livejournal or Google Blogger) as opposed to installing blogging software on your own webspace?

I'm a complete noob so I think it'd be much easier for me to get started by simply opening a Wordpress account rather than set up my own website, but I would like the option of having my own domain name if I ever get round to buying one in the future (so that people could go to my blog by typing www.myblogname.com rather than myblogname.wordpress.com for instance). Would it be possible to set things up so that the blog is hosted on a blogging site like Wordpress or Blogger but I also have my own domain name and it redirects to the blogging site when people type it? (Sorry if this is a stupid question, I've never worked on a website in my life! Common sense tells me this should be possible, but I want to make sure.)

Also, does using a blogging site have any advantages over using your own webspace when it comes to popularising your blog? I'm guessing that, if I set up something on a popular site like Wordpress, other Wordpress users might be more likely to stumble upon it and start reading it than if it was hosted on a lonely island somewhere on the internet. Is this correct or does it make no difference? What about if I ever want to make any money out of the blog (which I have no intention to atm, but you never know in the future)? Would it be easier to do that if my blog's on my own website or if it's on Wordpress/Blogger/etc.?

Finally, in case I pick a blogging site and later decide I've made a disastrous mistake, how easy would you reckon it would be to move it to my own web space in the future if I decide to do so? I realize that the answer to that question depends on the answer to my question a couple paragraphs up about whether I can have my own domain name redirecting to a blogging site, but there might be other factors to consider that I don't know.

Any advice will be appreciated! :)

I don't know about that. A couple of years ago I tried blogging on sites like Wordpress and found it impossible to find my page without the direct link.

You can easily have a domain name you own point to a site hosted somewhere else.

Installing and maintaining the software on your own server is probably hassle that you don't need. Let someone else worry about the security, configuration, etc. Especially if they'll do it for free.

That's kinda what I wanted to hear! Because I'm lazy! :p

What do you intend to blog about? Do you have something genuinely interesting to say or do you think the internet cares about your life and opinion enough to warrant its own webpage?

Ignore this person.

Everyone in the world cares about your life. Please publish it.

What are you people so bitter about? Just because nobody ever expressed an interest in your lives and opinions doesn't mean you have to call other people's attempts humbug! :)

I use blogger with shozu

blogger online and free.

Shozu is a mobile phone app, so I can post direct to it with image and text. Best thing with the app is I write it offline with my phone. I travel a lot so not into paying £7 p/MB, so wait till I got wifi!

I feel the same way about blogs, I just don't see the point in them if you have nothing interesting to say.

surely he wont find out if people are interested in or like what he has to say until he actually says something on the blog

I blog for myself when I travel. So I can later look back and remember what I got up to, and the good times I had.

If someone takes interest in it that's a bonus! :D

The only time I can imagine wanting to personally blog was if I were traveling so that family could keep in touch.

I however, do blog for cash, and it's definitely worthwhile :)
