Bloodborne - am I missing something?

So I got my PS4 back in the summer and with it Bloodborne. Now I've been playing it on and off since and have made some progress, I actually just finished Vicar Amelia and was presented with a cut scene. Now bear in mind I am really enjoying the game and it's combat, visual style, weapons etc and but listening to the newest cane and rinse this morning realised that I'm missing one thing - the story :o
I'm really not sure what's happening and it's kind of frustrating me now as I know this is a big part of the game. I've spoken to the NPC's in the hunters dream and read item descriptions as well as knocked on doors around Yharnam but still have no idea what's going on, how do I know where to look and what to do? (Apart from looking in walkthroughs) or do I simply have to look online at BB lore?

Any help will be appreciated - thanks :)

You've done better than me, I can't stand games that either wilfully or through poor design are as inaccessible as Bloodborne!

Bloodborne isn't inaccessible in my opinion.

It requires a different play style to most things out there which is fine to not enjoy, but doesn't make it inaccessible. The controls, combat and exploration are all remarkably solid.

The difficulty curve is pretty spot on, the bosses are either a great accomplishment to down on your own or very accessible as a group.

As someone who hasn't played any Souls games before, I disagree. There is virtually no introduction, no hint on how/what you should do, how the controls work, what the random crap you pick up is for. I have tried a few times but the horrendous UI and lack of even some kind of optional help to get you going just makes it more effort than I can muster!

Best bit of fun I had with this game was trying to kill the first wolf with my bare knuckles. Nearly had him too at one point! - I refused to move on with the game until someone told me - oh yeah, you have to die there - doh!

like wtf? yeah it is confusing - think the reason I stopped playing is I got half way through the game or so and then got lost - no idea what to do next either bud lol :)

I'd like to play this but I'm not going to shell out anything if it's as similar as the Souls games. With any luck they'll give it out on PS+ by the time the next one comes round.

I do like the game and the combat is good, but like a lot of others I feel like I'm missing the bigger picture. I've no idea whats going on or what I'm meant to be doing a lot of the time.

I've never played souls game before playing bloodborne.

What game gives you introduction? you kill stuff, and press R2 R1 L1 L2, like every other game.

What the random crap you pick up is for.

Every items got details about it, what it does. (also shown in loading screen)

I have tried a few times but the horrendous UI

whats wrong with UI? does the job and fits in with the game perfectly.

lack of even some kind of optional help to get you going just makes it more effort than I can muster!

You can ring your beckoning bell for coop help or use bots outside each boss room for extra help.

you need to complete the game to start putting everything together. e..g side quests and different endings

i could help you, turbo_nutter about the same spot as you now.

Playing the Souls games meant you got the same experience just earlier ;) They didn't really introduce you to anything either.

The games are all about working it out. Only way to figure out if you can 'do' something is to try it. Lack of handholding for me at least...doesn't make it inaccessible it just makes it...different.

Bloodborne is many peoples first game in the pseudo-series and many of them have loved it.

Intense, punishing and difficult..absolutely...inaccessible, only with zero-effort.

And like with the Demon and Souls games, it's all meant to be a bit fever dream trippy and not necessarily make sense or have much of a story. This is a plus for me and I love the experience of just being in these dark, weird places.

I get the appeal of the difficulty and punishing nature of the game, but it doesn't need to be so obtuse. It would be a better game if it showed you the ropes to begin with.

I don't know how anyone doesn't find the animation ridiculous. Press a button and your gigantic axe swings across 5m in front of you. Doesn't matter if you're stood facing a wall, an enemy, or nothing.....just plays the whole animation. Things like that makes me cringe, the game is riddled with amateur hour stuff like it.

I don't doubt there's a quality game hiding under the shoddy facade but it just makes it too much effort to get past it for me.

If asked for an example accessible games, I don't think anyone can say Bloodborne with a straight face :P

Its not that bad, I'm new too the series of games but that first starting point with the wolf tells you all the controls, how too lock on, the different dodges, different attacks and so on.

It did? I died and ended up in a graveyard pretty quickly. Can you go back to the wolf bit?

I hadn't played the Souls games (albeit started DS1 for about ten minutes, lost interest), I absolutely adore Bloorborne.

It's brutal but for me that's the charm.

Yeah, I went right back too that starting part. Just before the wolf you have all these notes on the ground and they teach you about the combat system. The graveyard also had some notes on how too use items and so on.

What I mostly found difficult at first was managing stamina, I kept trying too attack and never hand enough too dodge. After a few hours I'm mostly fine outside of boss battles. If I did its cause I did something stupid, with the few exceptions where there is someone very difficult thats not a boss.

As someone who never played a souls game before, I love Bloodborne. Granted it's not perfect but the setting is amazing, the graphics are beautiful, the combat is up there with the best of 'em and whilst brutally difficult, the sensation of accomplishment after downing a boss is fantastic.

I do wish it had more checkpoints, in particular right before bosses as it's a right PITA to die 30 times to a boss and have to go through 50 of his mates before you can get to him again. The co-op system is weird, you need to acquire something to ring a bell which then lets someone join you, it feels forced and clunky, as if they forgot about it until the game was already in boxes and rushed it in as quick as they could.

The lack of story is certainly an acquired taste and has spawned a whole underground community of fans trying to decipher it, with all sorts of theories and takes on how it is meant to be. It's great and really gets the imagination going.

This is also a game which makes me want to throw my joystick out the window too however, it does at times feel like it's just being obtuse for the sake of it.

Joystick? Dude, your beginning to show your age ;)

Agree with you mostly - its a steep learning curve and whilst I do like the hack n slash button bash which requires no thinking at all in other games, this is a refreshing change.
