Yep, i have my vipers on the cpu cooler at 900 rpm at idle, the other 6 case fans are on a zalman fan controller, dialled to medium, one fan is for my 470's, held in place with a shoe lace and a cable tie.

ok i have a question. when i first did the OC i wrote down the following results:
bclk 200
multi 20
vcore 1.2750
RAM 1.65v
everything else on AUTO
p95 max temp @ 12 hours: 78c.
Since then, I swapped the two 3870 for two 6870 and nothing else has changed in the case. The temps jumped from 78c to 90c. The GPUs blow the heat out so very little remains in the case. I reseated the heatsink tonight so any fault there is out of the question also. Why did my temps jump up like this out of nowhere? I remember a couple of months ago, during a hot day I actually hit 100c and the CPU was throttling.
I don't know what's going on. i feel like dropping down to stock or kicking it out of the window.

Id hazard a guess that even though the 2 gpu's u added vent outwards, there will still be some added residual heat coming from them, that stays in the case, and will build up over time.
And as the is only 1 exhaust fan, it may not be sufficient to keep the cpu cool, so that new top you are getting should help with that.

Curious to know but what paste are you using and how old is it? It might've gone off.
Another possible thing is that the 6870s intake more air then the 3870s, so there isn't as much air going to the CPU cooler. How many intake fans do you have on the case?

i do 10+ 4ghz overclocks on i7 cpus every day. if you are having those issues then you havent got your cpu cooler mounted properly.

ok keep in mind that two months ago i didn't have the two 6870 in the system. i still had the 3870, so the jump in temps was not purely due to the GPUs but it was a hot day and I had 28c in the room.
The TIM i use is thermalright. It came with the TRUE. I have used ceramic paste all my life.

between that and the 90c i am getting now, barely anything has changed and most certainly nobody moved the heatsink. Maybe if you threw some ideas on the table instead of telling us how many CPUs you overclock every day, it would be nice.
Unless you want to compare how many CPUs each of us has overclocked in their lives and how extreme the overclocks were.
short of me making a video of how i apply TIM and install the heatsink, is there any other info you require that might help my situation?
oh i did a bios update but i would be damned if the new bios causes increased temps...

I think your case needs some more intake, it's negatively pressured which could starve the CPU cooler with air.
Maybe get some MX4 paste as well, it could help.

i will stick to what i have. i don't think it is worth the money or the fuss and i got a few gallons of the thermalright paste here

surely with the side panel off, any heat from GPUs wouldn't make a difference to CPU temps and any airflow problems are negated in an open case. If i remember correctly my 78c result was on an open case, so it should still be achievable.

You've answered your own question. If your temperatures go down when you take the side of your case off, the airflow inside is a problem. Temperatures go up when the side panel is removed when air cooling is done correctly.

I still think the mount is bad, you up for putting a penny between the heatsink and it's bracket to increase mounting pressure?

i could do that but trust me the mounting is fine. i am 100% on that.
what i can't explain is why at first the max temp was 78c with side panel open and then a month later the max temp is 86c with side panel open.
even if the heatsink had moved, that's out of the question now since i reinstalled it 3 hours ago and still same temps.

This for sure - or get a suitably sized washer and put it between the mounting bracket and heatsink base. I did this myself and it seemed to dramatically increase the mounting pressure.
Also, if you are up for a hour or two of hard graft for the sake of cooling - lapping the base of the TRUE (and the CPU heatspreader if you don't mind losing the warranty) with some wet&dry sandpaper and an old picture frame (or any suitably flat surface) to reduce load temps by a few degrees.
However, if you want to continue this discussion I suggest you make a new thread about your issue - I get the feeling that rjkoneill wants to keep this thread on topic ie. "all bloomfield CPUs clock the same, you muppets!"

Your case has poor airflow, thats the problem.
Back on topic. I'm starting to wonder what's the point in buying any of the i7s apart from the 930 if they all clock the same
