(This isn't related to my ooops thread)

My car sounds different than normal when accelerating. It sort of makes a sucky noise and is louder, I'm assuming and hoping its just a blown exhaust, how do i know? There is no difference to how the car drives, so I'm really hoping its nothing to do with the engine.

Also what causes blown exhausts? Is it just wear and tear, or can something speed up the process?

Well I seriously doubt it is the HG, so no worries there. The HG is in between the head and the main block. The exhaust gasket is in between the exhaust and the engine.

a gasket is just like a washer, it can be anywhere where a seal is needed, in the exhaust to stop the, gasses leaking or in the engine to stop oil leaking so its not related dont worry! :D

phew, I'm not a mechanic, i just wikipediaed gasket and it came up with head gasket! What sort of price would you pay to get it looked over by and fixed by a mechanic, assuming it is the exhaust?

isnt it your mums car? so she would pay wouldnt she?, its pretty easy to check tbh, just put the engine on and get underneath the car, if the exhasut is blowing it should be pretty obvious where it is coming from, having someone sat in it revving it gently will help you locate it and when you have (assuming its the exhaust) you can look at fixing it, if its a hole it should be easy enough you can buy patch kits (gum gum I think), which you just put over the hole and fix on (really easy to do) if the flexible joint has gone it will be more trouble and your only real options are to get the section replaced or welded.

By the sounds of it, his mum bought the car and insured it, with him named...

As Rich says, it's easy to check and it isn't a big deal really.

Well my dads looked at it, and in the exhaust is what appears to be black wig hair, which my dad has said is silencer, so he has removed as much of it as possible, so hopefully the exhaust should be back to normal soon! He's not sure whether it will pass an mot with the exhaust how it is, but says it will drive fine till then, so he doesn't want to replace it yet.

It is my mums car, i get to use it at the weekends, as she only works on the weekdays :)
