It looks like MS could be making a Blu-Ray drive add on.

According to a report in the hardware press, Microsoft is set to announce plans for an external Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360.

According to the report, Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp has picked up a contract to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for Xbox 360. A price of $100 - $150 is being suggested, although the story says this number is “rumor”.

Microsoft’s short-lived flirtation with Blu-ray rival HD-DVD was widely seen as a tactical move against Sony’s Blu-ray drive; one that failed to stem Blu-ray’s victory over the rival format.

Now Microsoft is seeking to bridge a gap between its machine and PS3, by offering Blu-ray as a relatively inexpensive add-on for Xbox 360. Edge is chasing Microsoft for a comment.

Seems unlikely. Toshiba , to date have refused to make a bluray drive/player since losing with HD-DVD. They say they will focus on upscaling DVD players which they think are almost as good as blu-ray and what people want.

Can't see games for 360 appearing on blu-ray this gen. Next gen then I think that'll be the way they'll go (unless a new high-storage disc is available.)

Oh I know that. I was just pointing out that if MS do make a Blu-Ray drive:

1) It won't be built in. The HD DVD drive wasn't. A Blu-Ray drive wont. They have nothing to gain by building it in.

2) This generation, the only thing a Blu-ray addon will do for the 360, is play Blu-Ray DVDs.

I've seen this topic a lot in the past few months and everytime microsoft comment that they have "NO PLANS" to unveil a blu-ray drive, this is pure rumor and would be completely astonished if this is what they plan to do.

especially for Toshiba who still seem think HD-DVD is not dead yet.

I dont see how people can want to watch movies on the 360 though especially blu ray, the console is too loud tbh, although this may seem a fanboyish comment I'd much rather watch films on a normal dvd player or ps3 than 360. The choice of releasing the add on is never a bad thing though, unless they want to print 360 blu ray games which would be shooting themselves in the foot.

The only thing noisy thing about the 360 (apparently, I have no problem with it myself) is the DVD drive. A external drive that spins and a very low speed makes no noise. So there goes that problem. Next?

the more people that have blu ray the cheaper the films will be hopefully, as im not paying £20 or more for one.

You don't have to, my most expensive blu-ray was £12 which was batman begins. Stargate, The Fith Element and 300 all cost me £9.99. You can even buy the 5 disk special edition of Blade Runner on blu-ray for £19 so i think you're looking in the wrong places.

Im not sure about that, DVD's held their prices for quite a while, its only now im getting used to getting films for £5 the way they should be, Single disc with no bonus features or special sleeve.

Would be good if it really happened, but not holding my breath. Like a lot of people have said, this rumour has been bouncing around for ages.
