I'm looking to purchase a Blu ray player, probably a Sony BDP S350 or similar

The only thing is that my surround sound receiver is a fairly old one and therefore doesn't have any HDMI inputs

Will a blu ray player still have the old rca audio outs to feed into my amp

Sorry if it is a nooby question, been out of the game for a while!

You would have to use the 6ch output (if the 350 has that, the 550 will) to input to your amp for HD audio. You would be able to output via componant from the BD player to the TV unless your AV amp has video inputs/outputs you're going to use.

As said, if you go for the S350, you will either use stereo phono analogue connectors, or optical/coax digital for 5.1 (compressed). You can not get uncompressed HD audio to an old amp from that player.

Yuo wwould either need the 550, a new receiver, or I have seen a box which takes HDMI in, and outputs 6.1 analogue phono plugs. Probably too expensive though.

I can live without HD audio until I can afford a new receiver but as long as I can still get surround sound that is fine

As long as the receiver has optical or coax digital input, you can still get surround, and it will probably be higher bitrate suround than old SD-DVDs.

Picked up one of these from Asda 30 minutes ago for £143.50

Stupid price considering you also get Wall-e, Mamma Mia and Hancock in the box and Batman Begins and Casion Royale sent through the post :D

Wow that is a pretty good price. I'm almost tempted. I still remember paying 179.99 + 20 to get my NS405 DVD player + region free back in 98/99 i think. That's the priceiest bit of av/hifi kit I ever have bought (excluding my plasma)

This was just before the market flooded with the cheapy DVD players.

<edit> hmm it appear i mis rememberd - it looks like that playe came out in 2002 . I found comments from people commenting what a bargain it was in 2003 for £130 :/

Right just want to clarify on this

If I buy a 550 I can use the 7.1 surround output on the back into the 6ch input on my receiver

I won't lose any sound because I don't have the the extra speakers for 7.1?

Sure it is a daft question but I am having a hard time deciding if I should spend the extra on a 550 now

You will not lose anything other than the sounds that were destined for the side surround speakers when you play a 7.1 channel movie.

I would also add that nearly all Blu-ray movies released now only have a 5.1 channel soundtrack anyway including films like THE DARK KNIGHT so it isn't really anything to be concerned about, I have around 70 Blu-ray movies and from just having a quick look just now only Rush Hour 3 has a 7.1 soundtrack.

I got my Sony BDP-S550 today and also have an older 5.1 receiver which I am going to connect via the analogue outputs.

is there a reason why some of you are using analogue RCA over coax or optical, or is it just that your amp does not support those?

I looked through the manual for the 550 last night and it lets you tell it what speakers you do or don't have so I guess it will be clever enough to work it out anyway

Ordered my 550 last night, should be here tomorrow

Not sure what you mean there, the only way to get HD audio output from your receiver to your 5.1 surround speaker setup is to send the audio via a hdmi cable to your receiver from your Blu-ray player or if your receiver has no hdmi imput you will need to have your Blu-ray player decode the HD audio from the disk and send each channel of sound seperately down an anologue cable (6 cables needed for 5.1 surround) to the corresponding inputs on the receiver.

It is not posible to send HD audio down a coaxial or optical cable as they do not have the required bandwidth.
