I don't think any time soon. Jobs seems to have a major hatred for it the same way he does flash. I can't see them backing down.

imac: Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive with 4x double-layer burning (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
macbook pro: SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

The air doesn't have an optical drive.

From what I've heard, even if you tinker and add a blu ray drive to your mac, OSX can't handle playback.

I'd like Macs to at least have Blu-ray for itunes back up. I have about 15gb of video already lol.

I doubt it'll ever happen. Steve Jobs famously called blu-ray a 'bag of hurt' some time ago.

only if you rip the disc first , which is a total faff on if you just want to watch a film

i tried a drive in my mac , ripping and burning works with other software but playing the data off the disc just doesnt work

Apple will probably start including them in macs in a few years time and charge an absurd amount of money for them as if its new technology.........and some fools would still pay it!

who needs blu-ray for backup ?

I've got terrabytes of stuff. It would be pointless trying to squeeze it all onto discs. Just back it up onto an external HD, or even better, 2 hard drives (Raid 1 External Disc)

I've actually been considering doing that recently.

Get one of these and set it to RAID I and mirror the 2 disks.

Shop around at OcUK's competitors and you can buy it for less than £150. Then your data is backed up onto 2 separate disks. Its firewire 800 too, so not too slow to backup onto.

But the new generation of thunderbolt drives is going to be amazing for backups.
