Why do electronics companies insist on fitting super bright LEDs to everything?

The LED on my Creative speaker is seriously impairing my vision right now, I have blue glare all over my glasses :(

They're classy, attractive, understated speakers.... aside from an LED that seems to contain similar lighting power to a dying sun!

Why do they do it?!

In the past I've had so many LEDs on and around my TV that it's hard to concentrate on the screen in the dark.. I really don't understand it.

Most consumer electronic items used to have green LED's because it was the most comforting colour and easy on the eye. Now we have items with blue LED's because I guess it's the 'cool' / modern thing to have.

I have my 32" lcd connected to a HTPC which has a permanent blue led for the power and a flashing blue led for the HDD which is constantly flashing watching TV. I also have a blue led on the amp. A blue led strip on the tv and my router having a epie 24/7. Oh and sky had to get in on the action with a green led to tell me the sky box is on

So yeah I think we should hijack products with LEDs :D

My P150 has a blue HDD LED, it drove me crazy as it could light up a room so I unplugged it. You would think that less powerful LED's are cheaper?

They are. A lil green LED would cost the consumer less than 5p, blue LED's often cost £1 or more.

Blue LED's also consume a lot more current than green/red ones so not only are they annoying but they're also contributing to global warming and thus the current floods that are happening!

I don't have that problem - the blue light on my T20s is pretty temperamental and just decides to turn itself off most of the time, like there's some kind of retarded Gremlin inside.

The T20s are what I've got, but my LED works.

Wanna swap? :D

Depends where you buy them from but they are certainly a lot more expensive comparatively than their green/red counterparts.

BTW Blue LEDs = Gloucester floods.

I just bought some T20 speakers and that was the first thing that hit me. I used to have some I-trigue ones and they had a misted bit of plastic covering the LED which really helped but these news ones are far too bright.
I usually bung something in front of it to help.

It depends what type you get but they're certainly much more expensive than other colours. I remember working on a project in the sixth form where we arbitarily decided to use a blue LED, our teacher (for some unknown reason) bought about 50 of them, costing a fortune, and *then* told us off for wasting her money.

For some reason I think blue is a hard colour to produce.

Blue is of higher frequency than other colours of visible light, so has more energy(or needs more energy to emit it, I assume). This might be the reason.

Just limit the current going to the LED and it'll be less bright, despite what LED it is.

Burnsy

As burnsy has said you can dim blue LEDs by limiting the current to them so there really is no excuse for blindingly-bright LEDs.
