Hi all,

I have just bought a Samsung D7000 46" 3D tv and wall mounted it on the chimney breast....(hee hee i said breast). Anyway, my fiance and i watch a lot of Blue Rays on a low end Blue Ray player we got with the last tv. We want to upgrade our home cinema system as our Sony one is a little dated now. Does anyone have a Blue Ray home cinema system they can recommend or do i stick with the one i've got and just upgrade sony system instead.

Thanks.

Steve.

Difficult to really suggest anything without knowing what you want to spend. Anyway, if it was me i would keep the standalone Bluray player, invest in a AV receiver then look for speakers.

As said,without knowing your budget....

I would suggest buying a AV amp like the Sony STRDH810 which can be had for about £180 I have one of these and it is a great first amp. then pick up a powered sub with the spare cash.

You will be able to use your 5 speakers from your current set up until you can raise a little more cash to replace them. (just don't turn it up to max volume as you may just pop them!)

You're more likely to blow the amp first rather than the speakers. Low Ohms speaker (2-3Ω) pull more current from the amp than the 6-8Ω speakers it was designed for.

Either way, don't turn up the wick too far if you mix low Ohms speaker with a high Ohms amp. It'll end in tears and a trip to the tip.

I'm really not fussed about the whole separates thing. Yes i am an audio junkie and like good quality sound but i have to think about others in the house too. I'd like to go down the home cinema route really.

I respect your views on separates and understand the quality may be better.

It's not just the quality but the connectivity, processing and so the future-proofing that's a big advantage with a separates system.

If all you want is one of the home cinema in a box packages as you linked to then we probably aren't going to be much help to you. There's so many of these things and they're bought mainly on looks and inflated paper specifications - e.g. 1100W of music power - no way on earth. If it did then the leccy meter would be whizzing round faster than a hamster on speed. :D

The best you can do is find some in your price range and just check they have enough inputs and the ability to process DPL II, DD and DTS from an external source. :)

OP - In what way do you feel yours is a little dated? If you're not really bothered about better sound (as something like the Onkyo would likely provide) and are happy with your existing sound.
What are the reasons for upgrading other than thinking you should get something new and shiny to go with your new tv.

My Sony system is not blu ray...just a dvd home theatre system model number... DAV-DZ830W. I have a stand alone DMP-BD45 blu ray player that is connected to the sony system for the use of audio.

I took the plunge and bought one of these.... ONKYO TX-SR309B 2011 Model 5.1 AV Receiver. Read loads of reviews and this unit is pretty much entry level but has soooo many features. Ordered it 5 mins ago will be here by 1pm tomorrow.

£211.00 Thank you very much. Just need to get some decent speaker wire and speakers now. Any suggestions? Budget is around £300 again.

Thanks.

Steve.

Keep your existing blu ray player (a blu ray player is a blu ray player imo) .

UNLESS its a 1st gen one..

I had a 1st gen one, and it was taking the pee on how long it took to load a movie. Like 2-4 mins on some java enabled titles. Even my wife was WTF, how much did we spend on this piece of crap?
