i've been very stupid and got what i deserved. Tonight i downloaded a crack for a web design software (stupid cos i was in my 30day trial) double clicked on it and got a blue screen. Usual one hardware / software failure etc restart blah blah. But every time windows begins to load it blue screens again. Tried restoring to last known good config and into safe mode but same results. Off pc now but tomorrow will try booting with windows cd in. Does it look like i'll have to format or could it have messed up my hardware permanently?

Don't worry about damaging hardware. It's very very rare for malicious code to damage hardware, and it's mostly only possible in custom fine-tuned & targeted attacks, not something you get from wide spread malware.
