Blue screen of death with new ram

Well considering you have this thread about the RAM.

And this thread:

Samsung Spinpoint F3 slow or normal?

And this thread:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 - Slow and broken.

It does make me wonder if you're problems are deeper rooted.

Tell me about it. I RMA'd a 5850 last month because of terrible performance issues.. And the only reason I got that was because my 460 GTX was stuttering like hell! I have literally lost count of things that have gone wrong with my pc, it seems nothing I try works. I am totally lost to be honest, talk about not knowing where to start.

Well I suppose the one thing all all these issues can most closely be linked to is the motherboard.

Another possibility is a poor/failing PSU.

A less likely candidate, but still possible, is the CPU.

Yeah, I guess my PSU is getting on a bit. Its a 420W one, I cant remember the make off hand but maybe I should look into upgrading. To honest I've had it since 2005 so its done well. If you were in my position what would you do? would you keep hold of this ram and just use 4gb for now? or do I RMA it? I'd be pretty peed off if when I upgrade to my next board I go to dual channel and it doesnt work on there either lol..

If you've only recently received the RAM you can send it back under the Distance Selling Regulations and get a full refund.

Then you can have a think about what to do.

If it's from OcUK:

3.Under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) you have the right to cancel the contract relating to your order at any time up to the end of 7 working days after the goods are delivered. To exercise your right of cancellation, you must give written notice to Overclockers UK by letter, fax or RMA WebNote giving details of the goods ordered and date received. Notification by phone is not acceptable. If you exercise your right of cancellation under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) after the goods have been delivered to you, you will be responsible for returning the goods to Overclockers UK at your own cost. Overclockers UK will refund you within 30 days for any sum that has been paid by you or debited from your credit or debit card for the goods. If after exercising your right under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) you do not return the goods as required, Overclockers UK may charge you a sum not exceeding the direct costs of recovering the goods. Out of interest where are you located?

Maybe some kind soul can come and have a look at your system.

Im down in the south west. I've had a few people take a look and its been a mystery to everyone for months. Ive had problems with the graphics for like half a year with random stuttering, it only just got sorted (ironically) when I RMA'd the 5850 and popped back in the 460. I guess the drivers got well and truely flushed or something! Although I had tried flushing the drivers loads of times before that.... So odd.

I got the RAM from somewhere else (70 quid, free postage), seemed like a good idea at the time. I thought it would sort out everything in one go, improve performance and bring a bit of future proofing at the same time.. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Should I go back to XP do you think? I could reformat and go back to that, go back to W7 when I upgrade my MB next? I really am not sure which path to take next. My MB seems so ancient, I've just realised no stick on its ram compatibility list even comes in a 4gb variety, pretty shocking really. I understand if I go back to xp x86 I would lose 4gb..

Firstly please edit your post and remove the competitor name. It's against the forum rules and you don't want a suspension.

I would get a refund on the RAM while you can. There are plenty of offers on 8GB of DDR3 at around £70 and you can always get some more if you sort the problems out.

Going back to XP won't really help if you have a hardware issue though a fresh installation may help if Windows is messed up.

If it's a hardware issue I'd say it's most likely the motherboard but your PSU won't help if it's 6 years old (you didn't mention what the brand was).

I'd get a refund on your RAM, go back to whatever work best at the moment with your 2GB and start looking at a larger upgrade when you can afford it.

Anyway, I'm off to bed now so I'll check back tomorrow.

I've decided tomorrow I'm going to reformat and try Windows 7 one last time. I'll try installing it with my memory all in (8gb) and see what happens. If it doesn't like it I'll put in the old ram and RMA it. I think thats the best way to tell whether my issues are due to this installation of Windows 7 being botched, or the ram not wanting to play nice with my MB..

Guys.. I am now running a fresh Windows 7 x64 installation.. WITH my dual channel 8gb ram inserted and enabled!... Turns out the USB Speedtouch 330 modem was the culprit (yes I know, they're horrendous, dont worry I'm using a router now like normal people ;)). When I was reinstalling everything, it was the modem which caused the blue screens of death when I plugged it in. Its so strange that a USB modem could trip over a system like that, especially considering its only happening when a certain amount of dual channel memory is enabled!? (2Gb ram, 2x1gb sticks, running in dual channel was fine!!) I'm happy that my memory seems ok, but puzzled by this discovery to say the least!
