I've got some songs by B.B.King and they amaze me.

They amaze me at hoe ****ing brilliant they are!

Got one song called Lucile which is 10minutes long. I love this blues music.

Basically.
What artists should I be looking out for, and which comp albums are the best?

Yeah definitely check out John Lee Hooker and Stevie Ray Vaughn. I’d also take a listen to some Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, Downchild and Seasick Steve.

How bout a bit of Howlin' Wolf and perhaps more importantly Buddy Guy (always amazes me he gets forgotten).

That said, there have been some darned good British efforts too, early Fleetwood Mac comes to mind, as well as some of the stuff by Clapton (Buddy Guy speaks very highly of him) and John Mayall.

Great thing about really digging into the blues is it goes back sooo much further than most other current genres bar classical, and I find the further back you go, the better it gets a lot of the time (sadly the recordings get worse though!)

Edit: Just to add a bit of Buddy to the thread :) (for the record, I saw him last year, he still does the wandering minstrel thing, man can kick it for a guy in his mid 70s!)

So true but I find the poor quality recordings just adds to the atmosphere/mood etc
I specifically named Elmore James & Shakey Jake as I feel this is Genuine Blues, Both of these guys are Legends in the Blues world.

Slightly off topic but if you want to find out more about the blues then get "Martin Scorsese Presents: The Blues" a seven DVD box set which is a marvellous documentary series and can be had for around £15.

If we're looking for poor quality recordings, but high quality blues, can I get a bit of Robert Johnson in the house?

All of the other artists mentioned above are superb, but I personally get off more on modern blues artists than the old greats. Nothing gets me going like a bit of Eric Clapton or Jimi Hendrix.

<3 Cream. :D

If you just getting into the blues, then a couple of good compilation sets are:

ABC of the Blues. 52 cd's and around 100 different artists.

Chris Rea's Blue Guitars 11cd box set. The album he always wanted to make, and decided to before he had surgery that he only had a 50% chance of surviving.

Nothin' But The Blues - cheap as chips now.

If you can find it, The Blues Collection - was a magazine and CD thing way back in 1995 - 92 cd's - but some excellent stuff in there.

Personally for me, Seasick Steve, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, B.B. King, Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt, Ligntnin' Hopkins, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Bo Diddley, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Gatemouth Brown, The Blues Band, T-Bone Walker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Howlin' Wolf, Lightnn' Slim, The Super Super Blues Band, Nine Below Zero, Memphis Slim....

There was a great documentary on BBC just over a week ago called 'Blues Britania: Can Blue Men Sing The Whites?' sadly it's no longer on iPlayer but they do tend to repeat it every now and again.

You also might want to take a listen to Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra album 'Swinging the blues, Dancing the Ska' which is one of my faves by him.

Youtube could probably feed you for years with BB King, he just has so much material out there.

Check out the other Kings too - Albert King and Freddie King.

Albert Collins too.

That's just for starters! :D

Love Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly. Check our Papa Charlie Jackson for some real early (if not so strictly) blues.
