Hi all,

I want to move the cable which runs from the my outside wall to the brown box outside my house so looking to replace it. Anyone know the name of it? I can supply pics if needed.

Thanks for reply but it's not coaxial. That's what runs from the box inside house to the modem.

The one I need is the cable from brown box to roadside. It's quite a thin cable with around 4-5 coloured wires inside.

Your on about the telephone cable. You can get that at any good diy place.
But I would not touch the box as if you get a problem they will chrage you to fix it. As Duke says call them.

How certain are you this is telephone cable? I think this could be the case but need to make sure.

I'll most likely call the engineers in to fix wire to box but the problem I have is that my house is quite a distance from road and at the moment I have the 'telephone' cable running inside some pvc cable ducting. I want to move it so I might get the cable ready at both ends and then just let them connect.

I would just call 150 and tell them. Hold on did VM do the ducting?
I would not touch the cables as it may all go wrong and they send a big bill.
And don't forget you have to wait for them to book a day to do it.

Sorry for delay and thanks for reply,
No i did the ducting.

Ideally I want to just get the cable ready for them to connect to the 2 boxes. I want to duct it myself as it will take me several hours to run the cable in (needs to go under a lot of stuff).

I'm still not certain on the cable type I need.

If you ring VM to arrange it they may be willing to supply the cable and arrange an engineer to do the actual connections if you run the cabling - explain that you need to run in an a manner that is going to take time/whilst decorating (there will almost certainly be a fee for this, I think the standard "I want to move my services to a different room" fee is about £100 now).

Do not touch the outside cabling yourself - if you do not terminate it properly, or use the wrong cable they will not be happy if/when it causes a fault that requires them to send an engineer out to fix (I think it's technically illegal for you to access the external box, certainly against their T&C as that is I believe always their property).

Supply some pics, but multicore NTL cable will be telephone cable as others have said. Normally the telephone cable is run with coaxial for broadband/tv, surely you'd need to move both types?

I used to work for telewest. for my sins.

Your best bet is to keep an eye out for a virgin installers van and ask him to do it for a bung.

The cable though is a twin cable with coax and phone cores together in a figure of 8 type set up. thin for phone fat for tv/BB
