Ok. I don't mean to create another 360 vs ps3 thread, because it isn't, and because HD-DVD is dead, I just want to know why do people keep pluging away about ps3's bluray capability? Specially baffled when people say "don't think of ps3 has a console that can play Bluray, think of it as a Bluray player that can play games".

I remember back in 2000 when the PS2 came out people were plugging away at the DVD capabilty too, but how many people actually did use it afterwards? Is this not history repeating itself with the ps3? Now that Bluray has won and no doubt stand alone players will be mass produced and tumble down in price, just the way DVD had done.

PS2 was my first DVD player and PS3 is my first Blu-ray.

The biggest difference is that while the PS2's DVD capabilities were average at best, the PS3's Blu-ray is arguably one of the best players on the market. I have no doubt this will change in coming years as the price of standalone units decreases though.

To be honest the ONLY reason I am considering a PS3 is because of blu-ray. I have just bought a nice Sony 1080p LCD and I'm hankering after the HD experience that blu-ray offers. Fact is, the cheapest standalone blu-ray player is only £20 less than a 40Gb PS3 (which is infinately more upgradeable and capable). The PS3 can also be used as an HD media streamer for .mkv files (after transcoding to vob) and obviously can play games.

I'd rather have a 360 with a blu-ray drive but it looks unlikely at this stage that we will see one soon. So what do you do? PS3 is the sensible option.

I got my PS3 to play Blu-Rays primarily, the games were a bonus.

Also, don't forget at launch there were a certain lack of games *cough* ;)

There's no doubt that the PS3 is a games console though, and as soon as decent, cheap, dedicated BD players arrive then it'll die down as a selling point. However, at the moment the PS3 is the only real BD player with any sort of future proofing.

The DVD player on the PS2 played DVD's but it wasn't all that great.

Where as the PS3's Bluray player is actually a very good one. And the User interface is very impressive.

So I doubt it will go the same way as the PS2's DVD player and end up not being used.

If a PS3 is in a home, You'd never need to buy a seperate Blu ray player. Unless you wanted an additional player.

That's the way I see it anyways :p

It would never be as successful you mean? :p

most of the general public, Especially if they are equipped with a hard ware upscaler of sorts, Will not see a massive benefit from spending the extra cash on HD Movies.

I will no doubt, Carry on buying DVD, and only buy HD Blu-rays for truely spectacular movies, Like 10,000 BC and Speed Racer when they are released.

i don't agree.

I think you will start to see mass production of bluray players eventually offering higher quality films for the same price as current DVD players, this will increase demand for films on Blu ray.

It's not the same as VHS/DVD but nearly.

How many people would buy a PS2 if the PS3 was 30-40 quid more only? Blue ray players for 399 euros at the moment expect budget players to sell for under 200 euros. Why spend 150 euros on a dvd player when you can benefit from blu ray for 50 euros more.

It will happen.
:o

Yeah, I guess I could have written more but I'm eating my porridge :p

I don't think Blu Ray is going to have the same impact that DVD did and it's not going to become as widespread.

Wannabedamned pretty much sums up what I was thinking, for the majority of people DVD is fine.

See the big difference (as already mentioned here by some people) is that the PS2 was a pap dvd player - no decent remote control, poor responsiveness, terrible at reading dirty DVDs, poor UI etc etc. However the PS3 is one of the best blu-ray players on the market and due to its update able firmware, a CPU faster than your average blu-ray player and the a very good remote available it will be for some time to come.

The PS2 was my dvd player for a short while, basically i used it to confirm that DVD was infact that much better than VHS and then went out and bought a DVD player. The PS3 has actually replaced my current dvd player as i prefer the responsiveness and quick UI and i can see no reason why it won't remain my primary blu-ray player for years to come.

DVD may be fine for most people but it isn't fine for the film studios - they like to have one dominant format and would love you to purchase all your favourite films again on BD.

BD players and films will drop in price and then DVD will eventually be dropped as a format as BD becomes more popular.

I don't see how BD won't become as popular as DVD. More and more people want to see video in high definition, and one of the main ways to do that is to buy BDs. I mean high definition media is hard to get a hold of even on torrents.

Btw andshrew I remember my PS2 being a lot faster DVD player than 2 or 3 other DVD players I had tried in the past.

i still say there should be an upgrade path for dvds. only really dedicated individuals are gonna spend £20 on a blu-ray of a dvd they already own, or even a dvd they can pick up brand new for £10. "trade in your original dvd+£5/£10 get the blu-ray version" would i think make the move over to blue-ray less painfull and more widespread

You won't have a choice to buy dvd one day. It will switch over whether you want to carry on buying dvds or not. They will push DVD out.

yup this will happen soon.

At the moment you can buy a DVD player for 49 euros.

I have 3 dvd players in my house and use the PS3 now for watching DVDs it's great and the resume function now added to 2.20 is great as I can now switch and swap dvds and it remember where i left them. Perfect as my kid sometimes likes to watch 34 mins of a film gets bored and expects it to restart where he left off so easier for me.

I think BR will be the only player available in 3-4 years if not then SONY have had an epic fail!!!

I think BD & DVD will co-exist quite happily for the forseeable future. SACD & DVD Audio never threatened CD, DAT never threatened tape etc etc.

BD will become popular thats for sure - we'll just see a two tier market from now on.

I just wish more Asian films were getting BD releases, I'd love to 'upgrade' some of my DVD collection, but the vast majority of it isn't Western, so I've not yet had the opportunity.
I'll grab House of Flying Daggers when I see it on the cheap, possibly Old Boy (although I'd prefer a box set of the entire Vengeance Trilogy), those aside though, it's all a bit dead.

"If you have PS3 connected to your TV then you don't need an expensive Blu Ray player"

That is the stance that the manufacturers will adopt, and I can see it taking affect.

For example, a family of 4.. they have a HD TV (as most people do) and a PS3 for one of their son's. They see these adverts for HD movies on Blu-Ray, and want to buy one to try it out. Little Timmy tells them that the PS3 can play Blu-Rays and they're done.

Of course, the hard part is trying to get the public to understand that the PS3 can play these films, and that it's all backward compatible.
