Bluray in the PS3 going the same way as DVD in PS2?

The thing to remember is how many people have got a hdtv/plasma screens almost everyone i know at work have still got normal tv and willnot upgrade until it breaks maybe when freeview hd is launched that will help and when you can pick up a dvd player from a supermarket for 10 to 20 pound deals £300+ for a blue ray player looks a lot.

See the big difference (as already mentioned here by some people) is that the PS2 was a pap dvd player - no decent remote control, poor responsiveness, terrible at reading dirty DVDs, poor UI etc etc. However the PS3 is one of the best blu-ray players on the market and due to its update able firmware, a CPU faster than your average blu-ray player and the a very good remote available it will be for some time to come.

The PS2 was my dvd player for a short while, basically i used it to confirm that DVD was infact that much better than VHS and then went out and bought a DVD player. The PS3 has actually replaced my current dvd player as i prefer the responsiveness and quick UI and i can see no reason why it won't remain my primary blu-ray player for years to come.
+1

The PS2 as a DVD player was extremely flawed in that you could not watch any DVD's in RGB... only composite.. Which kinda defeated the point of having DVD..

The PS3 on the other hand is an outstanding blu-ray player.. I myself sold my standalone Sony BDP-300 on ebay and picked up a 2nd PS3 after comparing my launch day 60gig to my standalone.. The PS3 won in every department.

I opted for a 40gig as a replacement for the BDP-300 and I've not looked back.. and for anyone who cares to know.. If you want a PS3 just a blu-ray player, then go for the 40gig as it's substantially quieter due to less heat producing circuitry. I don't think I've ever heard the fans kick in on the 40gig, whereas the 60gig's fans kick in after about 10mins of play in games and about 1/2hr into a bluray movie.. I say this because it was some people's concern that the fan noise may deter the ps3 from being a truly outstanding blu-ray player.

The only problem is, is I hold back from watching some movies until I can rent the BD version.. Being that this format is still new, the rental companies are a little slow to stock up their inventory, so my rental queues tend to be on short to long wait instead of instantly availible.

Oh and I get to play my games in a choice of rooms now, aswell as have a 2nd media center on my other plasma !!!! I dunno why i even went with the BDP300 in the first place

without a doubt the ps3 is the best bluray player available in the UK!! Period.

The player is 2.0 compatible and is upgradable. Couples with a decent AV reciever and you have a excellent HD home cinema system.

Like previously, the ps2 was my first dvd player and this is my first bluray player. Now we just need the better players here like they have elsewhere in the world *points at USA*

Fact is, the cheapest standalone blu-ray player is only £20 less than a 40Gb PS3
Says it all really. Sure standalone players may eventually be £100 but they're not right now, so it's like getting a games console nearly for free if you're after a blu-ray player.
