bluray player to router using ethernet probs

hi. Something that should be easy is turning out to be difficult and frustrating (for me anyway) Basically I have a samsung blu ray player that I want to connect via ethernet to my router. I have a 10m ethernet cable (this isnt too long is it?) and the network connection test on the blu player fails.
I dont know if the problem lies with the player or the router (a netgear btw)
Can anyone help me out?
