Blurred Borders...?

Evening all. I've seen a couple of people on here use borders which are like a blurred extension of the image (with a thin black / while line separating them), like these. Was just wondering how I'd go about doing that in photoshop as I really like it. Many thanks in advance.

It's not too tricky. Open your image, select all, and copy it. Then select Image > Canvas size to increase the image size and make it 10px in both directions and check the "relative" box. Do it in the colour of your inner border. (I think white works best for most pictures)

Then select Image > Canvas size again but this time 20px in each direction, and with a different colour. Duplicate the background layer. On the new layer, use the magic wand to select this new outer border, and delete it. then deselect everything.

Toggle the visibility of the both layers to off, and make a new layer. Paste your image (as copied before) in to the new layer, and press CTRL + T to transform it, and expand it to fill the frame. It should snap to the edges when it gets close. Press enter to confirm. Apply a gaussian blur of however much you feel (~50px for me). Drag this layer below the other layer, and enable the visibility again, and it should be done!

Bit of a long winded process though, I'm sure there are faster ways, or ways to automate it.

And thats why i hate photoshop...

In psp heres what you do:

Select the inner section of the border using the "selection tool"
Press ctrl + shift + I to invert
Go to Adjust > blur > average, and select aperture.
Press ctrl + shift + I to disable the invert, hold ctrl and use the selection tool to select a 1px bored inside the blured section. Use brush tool to paint whatever colour you want.

Nice one, will have to mess around with it. Thanks :)
No problem, let me know if I've missed anything out, but I think I put everything in :)

Should give you a good enough idea of how to go about it anyway. I may have a go at making an action for it at some point.

Admittedly I did just have a go as I was wondering how to do it aswell, there are probably easier ways to do it. and if it's made into an action anyway it's no problem either :)

Ahh you did it a bit differently to how I did - I had tried to do it whilst keeping the original image intact and placing the borders outside of it, rather than making part of the image in to the border. I'd rather do it that way as to not crop the edges of the image, but I would be surprised if I did it the quickest way, it was just one method that came to mind.

But you only need to do it once to create an action then you can batch process all your photos in one go :p

I'd also use alex's method, but to create the same border without editing the original image doesn't sound like a process that would take long at all. Add a white border, copy your whole image, increase the size of your image and blur it, paste the original image in the middle.

I did it pretty much the same way in the ones you linked to using the GIMP, rather than photoshop.

Just created a white layer, then a background copy, so the order is background, white layer, background copy. Selected the background copy, select the entire layer, chose select -> shrink -> 60px -> invert -> clear. This makes a duplicated centre of the image. Then chose the white layer in the middle, chose select -> shrink -> 50px -> invert -> clear, which leaves a 10px white line around the front layer, the background copy. Then chose the background, filters -> blur -> gaussian blur -> radius 200px.

I like this way because you are then free to change the levels of the border separately from the levels of the main image - so you can darken your border if the edge of the picture was already blurred, to make it stand out a bit more. The select all - shrink selection is much faster and more accurate than than selecting an appropriate border area by hand as well.
