Anyone know how much money should I be paying for an 07/57 reg BMW 1 Series.
Mother is after a new car and said she wants a 1 Series, I've had a look about and it will most probably have to be the 118d, due to the lower road tax compared to the petrols and better economy.

Am I right in thinking to qualify for the cheaper road tax bands the car has to be registered from Sept 07 onwards? So it will have to be a 57 plate.

The date the car is registered, provided its after 1st April 2001, makes no difference to the cars road tax under the new road tax rules. Rather, it's the emissions that make the difference. This means to get £35 a year road tax, you'll need an Efficient Dynamics 118d. Most, but not all, 57 plate models are ED.

Have you explained to your mum the stupidity of basing the purchase of a £16,000 car on whether her tax is £35 a year or £110 a year?

No she's not buying it just because its got the cheap tax, she wants a 1 Series anyway, and from looking through all the specs I proposed the diesel varient due to its better economy and the cheaper tax. She isnt buying it because of the tax, that is just a bonus.

Make her get a 120d instead.

How many miles does she do a month? The petrol versions of the 1 Series are considerably cheaper used than the diesel ones becuase your typical 1 Series buyer (Dippy houswife) is incapable of rational car purchase and assumes DIESEL = CHEAP for her 15 miles a week to Sainsburys and back :p

Why? Besides a bigger engine, whats the difference? The 118d is her best bet I think.

It's not a bigger engine, it's the same engine but in a different state of tune. It's pretty much as economical, has more usable performance, will have stronger residuals and is likely to be better specified.

Haha, she's a nurse and commutes to Manchester most days which is around id say a 20 mile round trip at a guess. However, having said that, her last car was an 04 reg and it had only done 25k miles. So not a MASSIVE amount of miles at all really.

She pretty much is dead set on a 1 Series though. I see 55/06 regs go for around £10,000 on AutoTrader, which I don't think is a bad price really. Oh yeh, it has to be 5-door aswell lol.

Doesnt really seem like a diesel is worth it for her. Dont forget, diesel is about 10% more expensive than petrol. 118i's are cheap.
