Can't say I've ever had that before, I'm the same age as you, probably look younger and have filled up in 530's, 320's, 120d's etc etc :p

Sounds like you just got an odd attendant and I can assure you it isn't a regular thing :p

i had a e90 saloon as loan the other day from bmw , was 1.8 diesel , se spec , found it pretty poor tbh. was manual 6 speed , clutch , gear stick was shaking like mad in neutral , noisy has hell of an engine , iknow its a diesel but c,mon.(car had only 2800miles on it) , the only upside is that i like the front , but the rest of it yuck! maybe with a nice kit / wheels on it id change my views , slightly. the coupe on the other hand looks very nice :D

needles to say i was glad to get back into a petrol/automatic :)

Well if it's fundamentally the same engine as the 163bhp version in the 120d then it's not much of a jump from there to 190.

Superchips are doing a remap for the VAG 170 unit which takes it up to over 210bhp.
 
Yes but that doesn't mean it has the same size intercooler etc.

The Golf TDI's are the same engine but differ in other ways which affect tunability.
 
Its not the same engine as the 163bhp unit. Its the oldest M47 lump which in base form was only 116bhp. Its received common rail injection to push it up to around 120bhp. It has a different bottom end to the newer M47 units and anything above 160bhp will throw some cranks in spectacular fashion. Its still a potent lump for a car like the 1er with 160bhp but although its possible to squeeze 180bhp out of it, it won't last long. You'll also get spectacular turbo failure from the VVT Garret which is failing with increased regularity on x20ds.

To get a strong 160bhp you'd defo need to think about altering the size of the intercooler and making it flow more.

Yup, but thats 40bhp which is probably the maximum you'd see from any chip/remap. This is a whole 70bhp they are claiming which is almost 50% more than the VAG upgrade offers.

OT, its worth nothing that this engine responds better to a chip than a map whereas I remember Nick telling me the opposite was true of the M57 x30d unit.

The point I was trying to make was that, if the 118d's engine was simply a detuned version of the 163bhp unit in the 120d, then a leap to 190 would simply be a case of "un-detuning" the engine to the 163bhp output of the 120d then chipping it up to 190, IYSWIM :)
 
Well I hit 1500 miles in the car today,

Still pleased with it, its got a bit quicker now the engines getting run-in, and fuel economies gone up :D

Got to 120 Mph yesterday and it was still pulling a little so I havent a clue what the top end is? :confused:

No real minor niggles at this stage, its a very nice car to live with, though black is a git to keep clean!

As for 190bhp - no chance!

You "might" get it near the 120d's 163bhp but nowhere near 190bhp.

The max ive seen the 120d get to reliably is 208bhp.

If you think the 118d is good, step into a 120d ;)

I still smile now, will be sad to see her go. :(
