BMW 3 GT

I personally think the piano black plastic option looks great anyway. (assuming thats what that picture has)

There is no way I can take photos as good as that :p

I must say the new Mercedes E class interior is astonishing. The F10 interior, dare I say, is beginning to look dated.

When is the new 5 out?

BTW don't take that as your cabin is awful. It still looks good :)

The new E class is a generation ahead now - the new 5 goes on sale next year.

Had a poke around a new E yesterday. Stunning. Big improvement on the old model.

Picked up in a new E Series taxi the other day from Heathrow - had to jump in the front as there was 3 of us. It looked absolutely stunning, such a massive improvement on the other E 's I have been in.

Yep, the new E class is stunning. And it'll get better in 3 years time with the facelift. I'm aware it's a generation head, which is why I was asking when the new 5 is out. :)

Maybe in 8 years you'll buy the E class ;)

The E class interior has improved massively but it's still too ostentatious and garish, like all of Mercs products. Does nothing for me. 5's interior is classic and holding on despite its age.

Back to the original point, yes, the 3/4 series interior is as fugly and on par with a 1 :p

It's just the photograph - it's usually not plastic, it's various bits depending on trim level and spec - usually it's brushed aluminium or proper wood with a lacquered finish.

Whereas on the 3 Series it actually is just plastic...

Either way there seems little justification to bleat on about the poor 3/4/1 series interior when it looks barely different from the amazing 5 interior.

The 5's are better laid out with better materials, but I agree there isn't a huge difference looks wise. I was just dumbfounded when I test drove the 3/4 series, I literally felt like I was still in my 1 series, in fact they were worse than mine.

We'll have to agree to disagree then, I think they are sufficently different especially when sat in them. I have driven lots of both of them and frankly a 3 Series would be a better car for me than a 5 series so if the interior was as similar as you say I'd have happily bought one and saved a lot of time!

5 series interior looks much better in my opinion. It all flows together nicely and is elegant and well proportioned. The 3/4/1 interiors look like more 'normal' car interiors, its just not as tidy. Everything looks well thought out and integrated nicely on the 5. The others have the 'seperate' centre dash which doesn't flow into the rest of the dash, theres a gap between the console and the centre dash, the screen looks like an afterthought etc. I'm sure there must be material quality differences too, but I can't comment on that.

Obviously there are some massive similarities, but there are some massive differences too.

People die a little inside when they buy a diesel.

I actually died a little inside when I started looking for a diesel. I then died a bit more when I bought one. And I have been dying a little more each day ever since...

After 11,000 miles in one, packed into about 4 months, I'm basically a soul-less empty shell at this point :(

Still, mine is a touch different to Fox's. Fox's is modern and (presumably) refined, whereas mine is a dieselly diesel. :p

I have also been in a 2015 3 Series and the very same areas are indeed just cheap plastic and it feels low quality for a so called premium brand.

Having said that I have a BMW 4 GC and those plastic trim areas on the central silver trim dashboard piece along with the central gear console area are brushed aluminium with black chrome metallic. It really does make the whole interior feel much more premium. Overall compared to a work colleagues 5 series there is no real difference in materials quality on my 4 GC (5 being marginally better on soft plastics). The biggest difference for me in favour of the 4 CG is that is doesn't look as dated as the 5 series (inside or out) IMHO.

Totally different? Really?

interiors - a 1 Series, a 4 Series

Is it bad that I can't really tell which is which? If I had to guess I'd say the top one is the 1 Series.

The 5 series interior is markedly nicer looking, even though I'd be happy with any of them.

I think the top one is the 1 series too. And I actually think that (aside from the random red bit) it is a nicer looking dash than the 4 series.

I had a 4GT the other week. The interior is exactly the same as the equivalent 3 Series?

Yes the layout is the same, but the higher end 3 series and all 4 series get brushed metal or actual wood rather than hard plastic. This really does make a difference to the quality feel.

It's all down to preference really. I think nothing looks worse in a car than that horrible wood paneling. I mean it's a car not a boat, although when you drive a 5 series it's hard to tell the difference :P

Joke obviously. The 5 Series is a great car and the interior is top notch quality. I personally just think wood looks out of place in a car.
