BMW 320D SE

To be fair to the 320d, it does have a decent ride, a brilliantly communicative chassis, precise steering, and well balanced road-holding, regardless of the engine.

But it has an appetite for the crap Mitsubishi turbocharger fitted to it......budget £1000/£1200 when that cries enough.

Disagree with this, the little 1.4 120 is a great engine especially in a car the size of the Golf/A3.

Old man has an audi A3 1.4t. While i think its a really nice drive, car is silent at traffic lights etc and feels powerful enough he has had to have the timing change replaced. Its on a 57 plate with 40k on the clock.

Also they messed up when changing the chain and was spewing out oil for a week :p

I never said they can't be fun to drive, but if someone said to you:
Suppose I just want something that's fun to drive tbh.
would you recommend an e90 320d?

If it had to be a BMW, I'd be far more inclined to recommend an e46 325i (tax isn't as brutal as 3.0 in Ireland and as they're a "large" petrol, they're dirt cheap to buy) and use the saving on purchase price to fund road tax difference and repairs for many years.
Something like this:
http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4636919 (it's a buyers market, so you'd take that away for 3800e)
Insurance shouldn't be too bad either if you shop around and put your parents as named drivers.

I have an E91 320D Touring and I can tell you that I get around 30mpg doing the school/station runs. I have mixed feelings about the car. It is well built and has all the bells and whistles, but I find it boring. It handles well, but the ride is harsher than my previous V6 Mondeo, and this is down to the run-flat tyres more than anything else. The defining feature on my car seems to be its automatic box, which definitely dulls the driving experience and (I think) adversely affects the fuel consumption.

I have had the turbo go, at 85K miles, although I think in hindsight that BMW were very quick to say it had gone, and I've had the satnav conk out, so two big bills. Other than that is has been exemplary, and has not been any more expensive to run than my Mondeo. A BMW warranty on mine is about £65 a month which I wish I'd had for the turbo, and is well worth while considering for peace of mind, as my two big bills came to about £3K.

I think I'm going to be daft and trade mine in on a 545i Touring of around the 2005 era. I'd like the 645i convertible, but occasionally need the extra seat. I say this to indicate that even with the big bills, and my perception of its shortcomings, I'm still sufficiently happy with it. Unless Mr Fox tells me not to! :D
