BMW 330e

The charged range is a gimmick (tax saving measure) anyway. Who wants to charge their car every 30 miles.

It's simply a hybrid.

Easy if its convenient to charge at work or home to work and back is less than 30 miles every day? We have several hybrids at work now and unless the employee is going a longer distance, most of the cars are averaging well over 100 mpg.

Someone who drives less than 30 miles a day, presumably. Which is quite a lot of people.

It's a shame they tend to pair them with thirsty petrol engines and small fuel tanks which ruins the range, a plug in hybrid diesel that gives huge range out of town and zero emissions in town sounds like a great idea.

Thats exactly what Merc went with the GLE 350de

They've done it in the E Class and C Class too. Interestingly nobody else has.

I was also surprised. I think everybody else are trying to dump diesel as fast they can after all the years of bad press. To me its the perfect car until I go full BEV. I have a range of over 60 miles on pure EV but long range as and when i need it. Interestingly enough I read on some press release Mercedes are going to do every model with a choice of both diesel or petrol hybrid.

All my normal travel to work and back (32 miles each way) can be done on pure EV. My longer trips at weekends of 100 miles+ I dont need to worry about finding places to charge up and can save EV for when i get to towns/cities at the end of my trip.

Added bonus as with the BMW 45e, with the larger battery they put on board, you only get 6% BIK as opposed to 17% for all the cars with 30 mile ev range batteries.

nice hadn't realised merc had already put the bigger 60mile battery capability into their hybrid range, C class is upcoming and I read an article on bmw doing similarly (3/5),
it's a tax break point in the USA think they said, which is partly the motivation.

All diesels are gone at my place too, and those of us with car allowances with private cars are being encouraged to switch away from diesel too.

Sadly for me, used cars of the type which i would wish to buy, are near exclusively diesel, or only have a massive V8 guzzler of a petrol as an alternative.

I really like it, the real bad points are that it's wide and the boot is not *that* big (fuel tank makes you loose a lot) but it's a super comfy ride and it's generally doing everything I want from it. Fuel economy is fairly attrocious compared to my 540i though I don't have any real numbers and it's skewed by autobahn so not sure it's relevant (I'm averaging ~23mpg according to dash, not sure if that's combined or not).

What I'd really recommend is the integral active steering, it makes steering feel great and parking a bit more manageable.

Fairly glowing review from the best youtube channel around, they look fantastic dependent on your personal circumstances.

Cheers. I have a business 3 miles away that I visit regular. So its either that kind of trip or a 300-400 mile trip if i get called out. Luckily being called out is rare these days. But we do enjoy a European road trip every year.

It seems to have plenty of performance whilst the Battery is charged. Whats it like when its JUST the ICE running and nothing left in the battery

You won't get into that situation, there will always be enough battery capacity to use the eboost even when the display shows it is empty.

For short town trips the electric range is really good if you drive calmly, I really enjoy the feeling of driving in electric mode, it's really relaxing and feels very luxurious. The easiest way to feel what it's like with just ICE is in battery charging mode which I've used a few times, you don't get that instant quick but it doesn't feel slow, you just don't get that same shove which makes the biggest difference from a standstill. But it's never a car that feels slow.

What's actually really surprising is how good it feels to drive in sports mode in twisties. Don't expect a sports car but in a corner you would not believe it's a 2.5t SUV, the air suspension does an amazing job of hiding the weight.

Basically this. It's not really worth worrying about. I've had it fully empty before but it'll quickly get back a tiny bit of range and even on no range it'll still eboost.

Cheers Chaps

Seems like thats made the decision easier then
