I have a BMW 330E I bought it privately it is 2016 the sysmptoms i have been having is that when I have put my foot down it has started jerking violently. I took it to the dealers and the have £200 just to have a look so i thought i would try this forum

Could be a lot of things:
- Fuel delivery issue
- Spark plugs or ignition coils
- Transmission issue. Worn, or needs new fluid.
- Drivetrain, e.g. CV joints or driveshaft.
- Damaged engine mounts

Take your pic! My guess would be transmission.

Start basic, throw a new set of plugs in it. My 530e did this and new plugs fixed it, old ones looked perfect but clearly weren't.

Can you describe the "jerking violently" in as much detail as possible, e.g.

- What speed does it start?
- What speed (legal!) does it end?
- Under what circumstances does the problem occur, is the problem occurring consistently, or is there a variation, e.g. with temperature of the day?
- Describe the "jerking violently", e.g. how long is drive lost for, what happens when it re-engages?
- Has the car been doing this since you had it?

You should probably take it to a specialist where people who have experience with that car can test certain parts to make sure they work.

It could be anything.

it has been doing it at any speed it was so violent i had to stop accelerating. i have only had the car a couple of weeks. when i took on the test drive it did not do it I am not sure why. i tested it again today and it still did it but when i put it in eco pro mode it seems ok it maybe because the power is less in that mode i am not sure

Ask on some BMW forums, try to find a specialist who won't charge as much as BMW. It's a complicated car, you'll probably get nowhere getting people on a computer forum to help you fire the parts cannon at it

Have you checked the condition of your 12V auxilliary battery, i.e. the normal car battery? Apparently, a weak or failing 12V battery can disrupt communication between the electric motor and the petrol engine, leading to hesitation and jerky acceleration.

This might be why it was OK on the test drive, but isn't now, as the 12V battery is in poor condition and has got weaker.

ok i will check what you have said any more suggestions would be welcome also. I bought the car with no service history so i dont know when the oil was last changed, The on board computer says that the oil is fine but i think i should still change it. Does anyone know what is best as it has done 140000miles ?

Check your battery and report back.

Regarding the oil, check the level, then look at the quality of the oil on the dipstick. If it looks old then yes consider changing it. How often it should be changed will be in the owner's manual for the car. If the oil looks good, you won't do much harm running it around on the existing oil for a few hundred miles until you can diagnose and fix the fault. Depends on your budget I guess. If in doubt, just change it.

Hi i will check the battery now. I am just reading my question again and i never wrote it correctly. what i was trying to say is what spec oil should i use 5/30 or 0/30 0/20 etc

If the issue was present just after the purchase, it might be possible the buyer has gave up on the problem and just wanted to get rid of it... I'm currently fighting an issue with our F30, it has vibrations that 3 garages couldn't diagnose, so I had to get the tools out... I'm currently at £1k of repairs, car drives like a new car out of showroom, but still has vibrations. if you've no mechanical knowledge and no tools, it might be easier to just get rid of it... Otherwise it might cost you few grand before you rectify the problem, modern cars have all sorts of weird issues that most mechanics have no clue about.

The build quality on modern cars is just soo poor, I can't see it last as long, as some of my other cars... I'm sick of this car, but I refuse to give up!

Might be worth picking up an OBDC dongle if you've not already and see if anything is flagging up in the error codes. Otherwise find a local BMW specialist rather than a main dealer and see if they can find anything, you'll drive yourself mad like @IC3 trying to track down an issue with the electric motor side of things if you've got zero idea on cars.
