BMW 530i Sport or Ford Mondeo ST220?

I dont know much about the ST220 modability but I've got a modding list for the 530i..

Remap
Exhuast
Induction
...5L V8 :)

The Beemer, easily. As you pointed out, the premium marques aren't just about badge snobbery, they genuinely are nicer places to be.

I'd rather wake up in the morning seeing a BMW on my drive than the ST.

I concur entirely here, while neither are my cup of tea It would be the BMW every time. In a similar vein Ive been toying with buying an Audi S2 Avant or a Jaguar XJR and for me it will be a Jag - irrational and mad yes but the heart wins.

Btw, Excellent write up Fox, thanks for taking the time and effort.

Fox am personally gona drive my 5 series down there and slap u if u dont get the 530i :p

You know it makes sense !

I really like the ST220, very nice cars and seemed special (well Dangerous' one did).

I'd take the 530 though. In a heartbeat. This probably sounds like badge snobbery with it being a BMW but its in a whole different league. Its a much classier car. It just looks more...special.

Spotted and in correspondance with seller. Provided he doesn't want stupid money for it, it's close to perfect.

Have you had a look at the trade value on this, it only books at roughly £6k. Maybe a bit more on a good day.

Whats he asking?

Yea, I have. 5 Series trade value in Glass's are REALLY weird - it says that the car is worth £1500 LESS if it has no comms pack - thats a blanket figure of £1500 irrespective of price, age, mileage or whatever. This just seems odd to me. So, given that it doesnt have comms pack, it trade books at £6k - whereas it'd be worth £7500 with the package.

Most odd.

I don't know yet, have asked. I'll be staggered if he's after less than about £8k.

One problem with the BMW, it's gonna look like you've borrowed your dad's car.

I've been suffering that for the last 2 and a half years with the Mondeo, and 2 years before that with the Xantia. You get used to it.

Today I test drove two cars - a 2002 BMW 530i Sport and a 2004 Ford Mondeo ST220. Both were outside of my budget, but my aim was to drive two excellent examples to be able to chose which car to have.

Hm, you may want to test drive two examples that are within your budget and then decide ;).

Driving two outwith your budget may sound like a great idea initially but the ones within your budget will exhibt the signs of age that your going to be interested in, e.g. worn suspension, worn interior etc. Depends on which car will age better, how its been treated by its owners, where its been etc etc.

I don't know, if you want exclusivity i'd probably get the ST220 as there aren't too many around, but i see hundreds of BMW's everyday, almost as popular as ford fiestas!

However, the ST220 is only an exclusive car to people who know cars. To most other people its "oh, you have a ford mondeo with.....different alloys on it.."

You thought about saving your money for another few years and buying like something REALLY special, or u really want a new car now?

I've been in high mileage ones as well - infact I test drove a 100k 525i manual a month or two ago - and they were absolutely fine.

If my Mk2 Mondeo can make it to 138k without noticeable signs of the wear, then the right BMW surely can.

If it was me I would probably go for the ST220, it looks far more fresh and I always turn my head when I see one.

The Beemer on the other hand is nice and I'm sure is the 'better' all round car, but to me all the sport models look the same, bar exhausts? I've only ever seen one 530i and that was on the motorway, the rest were probably debadged like all the other 5 Series round here :p

How much money have you actually got in your budget? As for the comms pack, its an executive car aimed at 40+ execs so they expect it. Same as trying to sell a manual Merc. Kills the value.

Up to about 8.5 really. But I've never paid over book for a car and don't really want to start now. I'd rather get a good deal than pay over the odds just to get the car NOW if you know what I mean.

Have to see what he says I guess.
