Right, have narrowed the search down to something nice and powerful with more toys than Woolworths. I've been looking at the BMW 540i and the Lexus LS400.

The LS400 is the one I have driven before and I liked the couple of outings I had in one. I also know that they are rather expensive to repair, though it doesn't happen very often. They are also not as desirable to me as they are all Auto boxes ans I like a manual. Other than that, they tick all the boxes in that there is loads of power, nice for cruising, shedloads of space, plenty of dead cow etc. It's also more expensive to insure at £900 f/c.

Now, the 540i caught my eye because they are rediculously cheap for what you get. A massive V8 that is an absolute beast. Again, lots of dead cow and toys with pushy buttons and flicky switches. It also comes in the manual and the steptronic (though I hav no idea how good the latter is). The down sides are the nikasil issue, in which the big V8 dies from a cheap-petrol induced suicide for which the only remidy is a new engine. Its a BMW and servicing is going to be eye wateringly nasty, especially as I live 20 miles from the nearst BMW garage. But, at only £800 for the insurance (parked on my drive) it's not too bad on that part of the wallet

The Jag (XJ Sport?) is a wildcard really - prone to rust and stop working at randonm intervals coupled with an autobox and repair costs that involve pagan altars and first born male child make this the outsider. They are nice though and do look the part and later models are better than those made from rust and faulty relays.

Opinions please!

surely if you enjoyed driving a 530 would be the right choice with a proper rack and pinion and '50/50' weight distribution?

This is what a lot of people say - but it depends on his budget becuase he won't be finding a 530i for under £7k.

Could get a 528i, though. Best thing is to test drive both. Although it is true that the 6 cylinder 5's are better handling cars than the 8 cylinder 5's, it's also true that the 8 cylinder 5's are going to be noticeably better than a walloy Jag or an LS400, which are pure cruisers.

Budget is around the £5k-£6k mark though cheaper than that would get the missus off my case. Have been looking at c. 100k miles, full BMSH and 12 months test.

What's the step-tronic gearbox like and what about the 535i???

Steptronic box is nice - you get Automatic mode, auto with sports mode (So it'll go to the redline each time) and the Tiptronic mode giving you some manual control. Nice, smooth box. But not a manual :(

535i is largely pointless - it offers the fuel economy and running costs of the 540i but not 540i performance. However, it does make sense if you can't find a nice 540i.

Been watching that one - £500 on facelift front and rear lights and £1000 on a Sport pack and it'll look identical to the facelift models and the M5..

Having driven all 3 back-to-back on a Lexus training day, I'd go for the LS400 myself, but it's down to personal choice at the end of the day.

All three live up to their respective stereotypes well. i.e. BMW felt the most 'sporty', jag was a wobbly jelly with a slushy box, and the Lexus sat nicely in between. As fast as you'd want something this size to travel, but comfy enough to eat up endless miles.

btw, A few years ago I met a guy who had a 200k mile LS400, and it still drove like a dream.

Is mileage not a concern on 100k BMWs then?

Not from what I can tell, no. Residual value is hit by 100k miles but not much else, so taking advantage of this seems the way forward.

I've driven a 540i.
I wasnt impressed, although i only drove it for half an hour.
Not a new one you understand, this would be............... a 96 model and it was a couple of years ago.
I would assume later ones are better, this one only had 70k on it and it felt really tired, despite allegedly having a full service history.

If it was a 96, it could be either an E34 or an E39.

I have no experience of the E34 but if it was an E39 then I am very, very suprised at your findings.

Probably just a ragged motor.
Ive only driven 2 BM's that 540 and a new L reg 316i.

I'm sure it was the LS400 that was on a Top Gear repeat earlier on UK G2. They hated it.

I'd get a Jag. The other cars are great machines, but to me are missing the sense of ocassion that a Jag offers.

Few bits of info that spring to mind:

Remember that 1997-1999 XJ's with the V8 also (like the beamer) suffer from the Nikasil problem, so think about getting a compression test if a replacement engine hasn't been fitted. Also, a Jag will cost no more to fix than a V8 BMW.

The XJ6's had the option of a manual box if you really want it. Even with the supercharged engine.

Jeremy clarkson compared a 98 XJR to a 99 M5. And the XJR held its own well despite being the cheaper car.

Anyway, just my 2p as everyone else is raving about the Beamer, its a great car, but don't knock the Jag out of the race before you've tried it and given it a serious going over.

I've not been in the BMW or the Jaguar but my grandad has the LS400.

Very big car, suprisingly quick for such a heavy car. Absolutely loaded with kit too and best off all there is virtually no road noise.

When he started it up I couldn't even hear the engine!
